Clipper girls chart a new course

CCA girls set sail for success

TIFFIN– Once again, the girl’s varsity basketball team at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School finds itself with a new head coach after Matt Haas’ departure last spring. However, rather than an outsider coming in, the ladies are now led by former assistant coach P.J. Sweeney. It’s an opportunity for a new direction for the program, which has seen three coaches in the past six years and finished last season at 5-16 overall and 5-13 for seventh place in the WaMaC West Division.

70 years of memories

CR Horsemen’s Club celebrates the past

WESTERN– “It’s been a fun ride and we’ve really enjoyed it.”
An appropriate sentiment from equestrian Marilyn Butler, member of the board of directors for the Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club, and the driving force behind the club’s recent anniversary celebration. The club celebrated its founding in 1944, and the years since with “70 Years of Memories” at a Sunday Night Supper Oct. 12 at the club house on Club Road in Western.

New chapter for Spartan basketball

Jason Pershing takes over as head coach for Solon boys program

SOLON– After 21 years the Solon Spartans boys’ varsity basketball program has a new head coach.
Jason S. Pershing took over the program earlier this year, replacing veteran coach Brad Randall who resigned at the end of last season in February. Pershing is used to working among legendary coaches such as Dick Breitbach at Cedar Rapids Xavier, Chris Robertson at Linn-Mar and at Cedar Rapids Washington.

Van Allen honors veterans

NORTH LIBERTY — For the second year in a row, second graders and their teachers at Van Allen Elementary School said thanks to the veterans in their lives. Approximately 30 vets mingled in the commons area of the school’s second grade pod, swapping stories and looking over thank-you notes written by the students before being read a poem in their honor.
The veterans, many parents and grandparents of Van Allen students, then deployed among the classrooms to visit with the students, talk about their experiences and answer the students’ questions.

Harlan sends CCA home with 3-0 semifinal sweep Nov. 13

Clippers’ historic cruise at state ends early

CEDAR RAPIDS– While the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers only made it to the semifinals of the Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament, that’s farther than any CCA team has been since 1999.
The Harlan Cyclones blew through the U.S. Cellular Center Thursday, Nov. 13, and swept the Clippers 3-0 to end CCA’s bid for a state championship. The defending 4A Champion Cyclones had little trouble winning 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13 to end the CCA season at 27-10. Harlan was led by 2013 Class 4A Player of the Year Jess Schaben with 18 kills.

Failed referendum leaves county supervisors scratching their heads,

IOWA CITY- For the third time, Johnson County voters rejected a bond issue that would have funded the construction of an annex to the existing courthouse.
In the Nov. 4 election, the $33.4 million project received a majority approval at 57 percent; however a super majority of 60 percent was required.
The day after the election, frustrated supervisors met with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee (CJCC) for some guidance on what to do next.

Made it to state, and into the history books

Clipper girls see first state tourney since 1999 for CCA

MARENGO– After watching the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) football team make history this fall with the most wins in a season, a district championship and a play-off appearance, it was the volleyball team’s turn to add a new chapter in Clipper history.
The ladies earned their first trip to the State Volleyball Tournament since 1999 with a 3-0 sweep of Cedar Rapids Xavier at Iowa Valley High School in Marengo on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The Clippers were listing early in the first set, down 1-6, which prompted coach Jackie Clubb to call an early time out.

Warriors blitz West to end Trojans’ season

CR Wash 44, West 19 in 4A Quarterfinal

CEDAR RAPIDS– The road to the UNI-Dome and a bid for a state football championship in Class 4A for the Iowa City West High Trojans ended at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids as the Trojans’ nemesis, the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors, rolled over them 44-19 in a quarterfinal round game Friday, Nov. 7.
“This is the one team that can match up with our guys and they certainly did that,” West coach Garrett Hartwig said, noting, “we were just out-matched a little bit, and the credit goes to Wash.” Hartwig said, “(the Warriors) have just so many guys that can get you.”

After Connor Gordon’s extra point kick, the Trojans had a 38-34 lead and the win.

CCA’s historic season ends in first round

TIFFIN– An historic season for Clear Creek Amana (CCA) football came to a gut-grinding and heart-breaking end Wednesday, Oct. 29, on the home turf as the Cardinals of Newton held on for a 23-21 win in a Class 3A first round playoff game.
“It was a hard-fought game, there’s no doubt about it,” coach Matt Hughes said. “We started slow, that proved to be the thing that killed us.”
The Clippers found themselves in a 14-point hole in the first quarter as Newton scored on a 4-yard rushing play with 7:05 left in the period and followed that with a 50-yard touchdown reception.
