TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district has hired a contractor to build its new school.
Portzen Construction, Inc. of Dubuque was the winning bidder for building the new elementary on the northeast corner of the intersection of Highway 6 and Jasper Avenue. Portzen’s bid of $14,403,700 was accepted at the school board’s regular meeting Wednesday, May 21, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.
The amount includes four alternate features, such as a full-size gymnasium, additional parking spaces and casework cabinetry in the classrooms.

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy will face Dubuque Hempstead today at 5:30 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A Girls State Soccer Tournament.
West earned the right to compete after knocking off the Muskies of Muscatine 2-0 Monday, June 9, in a regional final on the home pitch.
Heelah Nadler knocked in the first goal seven minutes into the second half for a 1-0 lead, and Emma Cooper put away the insurance goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the match.

State championship hopes scuttled for Clipper boys

DES MOINES– It wasn’t the ending they wanted, and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers did everything they could to prevent it. In the end however, the Bluejays of Perry ended the Clippers’ state soccer tournament appearance by handing Tim Benson’s team a 2-1 loss in the quarterfinal round Thursday, June 5, at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.
It was the third trip in four years for the squad, and the third time a championship was denied them.
Perry dominated the first 10 minutes of the match and scored in the ninth minute for a 1-0 lead.

Trojans knock out Valley, Cedar Rapids Wash at state tourney

DES MOINES– The West High Trojans were well on their way to a third straight state soccer championship when heavy rains at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines on Saturday, June 7, postponed the finals match between West and Johnston to Tuesday, June 10 (during production of this edition).
The Trojans, under coach Brad Stiles, have earned four of the last five state championships. A win against Johnston would mean the first three-peat for boys soccer.

Solon Vietnam vet receives Purple Heart 45 years later

RURAL SOLON– On April 22, 1969, Ronald “Steve” Durr was standing in the back of an Air Force C-123 cargo plane as it was departing a Special Forces camp deep in the jungles of Vietnam. It was a mission the staff sergeant and his crew had flown many times as they brought in vital supplies to the Green Berets, landing just long enough for Durr, the crew’s loadmaster, to send the cargo down the plane’s loading ramp as it took off again. The area was known to be a hotbed of enemy activity, and on this day the Viet Cong made their presence known.
