Roy versus Devin

Hawk Talk

Since I did a comparison of Lisa Bluder’s first team in 2000-2001 and this year’s women’s team, I thought it would be interesting to compare Dr. Tom Davis’ first team in 1986-1987 and Fran’s team this year.
Roy Marble, a sophomore at the time, was one of the many stars that helped lead Iowa to a record 30 wins and five losses.
Roy’s team averaged 87.2 points per game. This year’s team, led by his son Devyn, is averaging 84 points.
Roy’s team had 10 players averaging over 11 minutes per game, Devyn’s team has 11 players averaging over 10 minutes.
Neither team would wear each other out.

Doubleheader

Last Saturday, the Hawkeye men played Wisconsin at Carver at 11 a.m. while the women took on the Wolverines at Michigan. Their game started at 12:30 p.m.
I don’t like losing to the Badgers. Before the season started, the Hawks were leading the all-time series, 79-78.
After Wisconsin’s 79-74 victory Saturday, they now lead the series, 80-79.
You had four Hawkeyes in double figures, Iowa had more bench points (35-21), more rebounds (35-33), but the Badgers had four more 3-pointers (8-4).
Iowa led by one with a minute to play, but couldn’t finish.
Tough game... tough loss.

Most wins ever

When the Iowa Hawkeye women beat Northwestern last week 90-84, Lisa Bluder not only passed Vivian Stringer for the most wins (270) in school history, she topped Tom Davis, the former men’s head basketball coach.
What are the chances of head coaches from the women’s and men’s basketball teams to finish their careers with exactly 269 victories?
All five Iowa starters were in double figures, with Melissa Dixon and Samantha Logic leading the way.
That’s the way Lisa coaches basketball, and why she has been so successful.

New kids on the block

Hawk Talk

It’s time to take a little break from basketball and wrestling as the Hawkeye football team signed 19 players last week. They plan to add a junior college defensive end this summer.
I always enjoy checking out the new recruits, whether it’s football, basketball or wrestling… the three sports I cover.
I always wonder who will be the next Shonn Greene, the next Aaron White or the next Bethany Doolittle.
All three we not highly recruited.
It also gives me a chance to talk to Reese Morgan, who is in his second year of coaching the defensive line.

UPSETS

I was going to concentrate on Iowa’s new football recruits this week but I have to give some love to the Hawkeye women’s and men’s basketball teams.
The Hawkeye women traveled to ninth-ranked Penn State and upset the Lady Lions, 73-70, last Thursday .
That’s the first time Iowa has beaten a top-10 team on the road since 1993.
The Hawks lost to Penn State 87-71 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena back on Jan. 5, and I have to admit I didn’t think Iowa had much of a chance.

Road win and home loss

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women had a road trip to Minnesota and hosted Nebraska last week.
They knocked off the Gophers, 64-56, Wednesday and lost to Nebraska 80-76 Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa played Lisa Bluder ball against the Gophers.
That is, four players in double figures, solid defense and 17 assists on 24 baskets.
“Such a great team performance,” said coach Bluder. “I love the balance of our basketball team.”
That’s the 20th straight game Iowa has had at least three players finish in double figures.
How much more can you say about Samantha Logic?
