Hawks get defensive

Hawk Talk

I’ve never been a big fan of low scoring games.
I didn’t mind the 12-10 game against Michigan in 1985.
Iowa was ranked number one, Michigan number two and, of course, Iowa went to the Rose Bowl that year.
The 6-4 win at Penn State, in 2004, saw Iowa go 10-2 that year, and tied for the Big Ten championship.
They finished with the last-second-win in the Capital One Bowl, 30-25, over LSU.
Also, there was the 7-6 win at Penn State in 1975.
I was a manager, but didn’t go to the game.

Marshall rocks Kinnick!

Hawk Talk

When you grow up in Solon, about 15 miles northeast of Kinnick Stadium, and you play for the Solon Spartan football team, you dream of playing football for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
You go back to the ‘70s, when Eddie Donovan, who played for Solon and was a Hawkeye halfback from 1973-76.
Eddie’s big moment came in 1974 when he caught a touchdown pass from Rob Fick with 12 seconds left to help Iowa beat Illinois, 14-12.
I was on the sideline at that game as a football manager for the Hawkeyes.

Hawkeye State

Hawk Talk

I thought about this story even before the game started.
Hawkeye nation was reeling from losing two of the best football and basketball players in program history.
Iowa lost Tyler Sash and Roy Marble last week, and even though the Hawks beats the ‘Clones last Saturday, 31-17, it still was a tough week for Hawkeye fans.
The only game I ever went to in Ames was in 2009.
Iowa trailed 3-0 before exploding for 35 straight points and cruising to a 35-3 win.

Kids Day at Kinnick

Hawk Talk

A couple of observations from Kids Day at Kinnick Stadium.
The defense rules.
Drew Ott and company had nine unofficial sacks, knocked down some passes at the line of scrimmage and didn’t give up a lot of big plays.
Last year, Iowa gave up 65 big plays, which means a run or pass play of over 25 yards.
That needs to be cut in half.
The defense also had two interceptions returned for touchdowns and it looks like the defense could be carrying the team early in the season.
George Kittle had three catches, mostly over the middle.
Kittle needs to step up until Jake Duzey gets healthy.

Hawkeye football preview

Hawk Talk

For the next three weeks, I’ll break down the Iowa football team.
No doubt, last season was a frustrating.
After Iowa beat Illinois in the 10th game of the season, they were sitting at 7-3, 4-2 in the Big Ten, and if they won out they would win the Big Ten West. Of course, the Hawks dropped their last three games, including a blowout in the bowl game.
During Media Day last Saturday, Aug. 8, there was a feel of optimism, the Hawkeye players and coaches are ready to move on and make last season motivation for this year.
This week, we’ll examine the Hawkeye offense.

Hawkeye schedule part 2

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a two-part story about Iowa’s football schedule.
Last week I thought Iowa would be favored in four games (Illinois State, Iowa State, North Texas and Illinois).
I think Pittsburgh could be a toss-up and the Hawks will be underdogs against the Badgers, with the game at Wisconsin.
This week I’ll talk about the three home games against Maryland, Minnesota and Purdue, plus road trips to Maryland, Indiana and Nebraska.

Hawkeye schedule

Hawk Talk

The Iowa Hawkeyes open the season Sept. 5 against Illinois State, which lost to North Dakota State in the championship game in the FCS division.
There is plenty of unrest in Hawkeye land. Iowa finished 7-6 last year and are 19-19 in the last three years.
Is this a make-or-break year for Captain Kirk?
Does Iowa have to win at least eight games to save his job?
I don’t know if I can answer either of those questions, but I will break down the schedule and predict if Iowa will be favored or not.

Kali Peschel

Hawk Talk

Kali Peschel has a busy summer getting ready for her senior year.
The 6-1 co-captain from Minnesota spent her first six weeks of summertime in Spain.
Kali is working on a double-major of Spanish and communications. She received seven credits while staying in Spain, learned some of the foreign culture and got to experience a different kind of life.

Claire and Kali

Claire Till and Kali Peschel have a total of 22 starts in their three years of playing for the Hawkeyes, with Kali having started all 22 times.
Going into their senior seasons, even with only 22 starts between them, you can ask any of their teammates or coaches and they will tell you they are just as important as Samantha Logic, Melissa Dixon or Bethany Doolittle were last season.
Both Claire and Kali are really good leaders on and off the court and have helped make the chemistry of the team work and provide a winning attitude.

Jarrod Uthoff

Hawk Talk

When Jarrod Uthoff was a senior at Cedar Rapids Jefferson in 2011, he was named Mr. Basketball and the 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year in Iowa.
At 6 feet, 8 inches, Jarrod could do it all. In his senior year at Cedar Rapids Jefferson he averaged 26.2 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 3.2 blocked shots per game. He could run the court, shoot from the outside, and was a good shot blocker.
Jarrod was named first team all-state and the Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year.

Adam Woodbury

When Adam Woodbury, Mike Gesell, Anthony Clemmons and Jarrod Uthoff came on campus three years ago, the Hawkeyes had only one winning season in the previous four. Since then they have gone 25-13, 20-13 and 22-12.
Before the senior class came to Iowa, they hadn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2005. Now they’ve gone two years in a row and won their first NCAA game since 2002.
To say the four seniors didn’t have an impact on turning the program around would be an understatement.

Prime Time

Hawk Talk

Prime Time (PT) is back for its 29th season. It’s come a long way since playing in the City High and West High gyms with no air conditioning.
Five of the six new Hawkeye recruits are playing and I thought they all looked like they can add to an already good core coming back.
“The first thing you notice about the freshman class is a ton of athleticism,” said senior point guard Mike Gesell.
