A look at returning Hawkeye basketball players

By Don Lund
Sports Writer
This is the second part of talking Iowa basketball with assistant coach Sherman Dillard.
Last week, I talked about Iowa winning 25 games, which is tied for the second most wins ever.
They have never gone to the finals of the NIT until last year and they played in 38 games which is the most games played in one year.
The Hawks also won 18 home games, including two in the NIT, which is the most home wins in a season.
I talked about Devyn Marble and Aaron White. Devyn led the team in scoring, assists, steals and most 3-pointers.

Saying so long to Hawkeye seniors

The Hawkeye women went to the NCAA basketball tournament for the sixth straight year, won 21 games and got a victory in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Iowa is the only Big Ten team to have appeared in the last six NCAA Tournaments.
I talked to assistant coach Jenni Fitzgerald last week about the season and the new recruits.
Coach Fitz has been on Lisa Bluder’s staff for 13 years and has helped the Hawkeyes to 12 postseason appearances, including 10 NCAA berths.

Spring football

This is the final part of spring football for the Iowa Hawkeyes. This week I’ll talk about the scrimmage last Saturday and special teams.
The scrimmage had a new look at Kinnick with the offense and defense going heads up and keeping score.
It was a perfect day for football, not too hot, a nice breeze and enough clouds not to get sunburned.
I liked the new format that had a point system that allowed for some good competition.
They played 15-minute quarters in the first half, 12-minute quarters in the second half.
I’ll start with the offense, which won the battle, 61-37.

Defense needs to get better

This week, I’ll look at the defense.

PART TWO

This is the second part of a look at Hawkeye football and spring practice.
Last week I talked about the depth and experience of the offensive line.
This week I’ll look at the tight ends, wide receivers and a new position called Y-back.
The Y-back will be a combination of tight end and blocking fullback.
The tight end position should be as good and deep as the offensive line.
Zach Derby is the only graduate, but when you talk about senior C.J. Fiedorowicz (6-7, 265) as your starting tight end, you are in pretty good shape.

No NIT champ

Iowa basketball season came to an end last week at Madison Square Garden with a 74-54 loss to the Baylor Bears.
The Hawks picked a bad time to go cold in their shooting as they hit only 26 percent for the game and missed at least 12 point-blank baskets.
That’s their lowest shooting percentage this season.
I’ve been doing an informal pool asking my friends if they would rather have Iowa make a deep run in the NIT or lose in the first or second round of the NCAA tournament.
Most of them agree with me that it’s fun to see the Hawks win and keep playing, like they did in New York.
