Bounce back win

Hawk Talk

After two straight losses to instate rivals, the Hawkeye men’s basketball team needed a win to get some confidence back.
They got that last week with an 80-70 win over the North Florida Ospreys.
North Florida came into the game with a 7-5 record with one of their wins coming at Purdue, 73-70.
They also lost to UNI, 66-49, and Northwestern, 69-67.

Hawkeyes roll

The Penn State women came to Carver-Hawkeye Arena last Sunday.
The Nittany Lions are in a rebuilding stage, coming into the game with a 3-8 record. Last year, they were 24-8, 13-3 in the conference and won their third straight Big Ten conference championship.
I thought the Hawkeyes would play them tough at home but never expected a 77-52 blowout.
Iowa jumped out to a 16-1 lead, led 41-24 at half and cruised to its first Big Ten win of the season.

Jake Rudock

Hawk Talk

Jake Rudock has received mixed reviews in his second season as a Hawkeye signal caller.
Some fans think C.J. Beathard should be the starting quarterback.
Jake just finished his junior year with a bowl game coming up. In two seasons, he’s passed for 34 touchdowns, which is the eighth-most in program history and has a 14-10 record as a starter. Jake has 4,787 yards passing, which is also the eighth-most in school history.

Dixon hits 10 3-pointers against Drake

WOW!
What a game for the Hawkeye women against Drake Sunday in Des Moines.
I’m writing the story Monday morning and I’m still impressed.
You start with Melissa Dixon making 10 3-pointers and finishing with 31 points.
No one has ever made that many threes in a Hawkeye uniform.
Then you have Drake’s Lizzy Wendell scoring a Knapp Center-record 43 points.
Finally, the game ends with Samantha Logic taking a pass with nine seconds left and the game tied at 98-all. She took it down the right side, banked in a shot with three seconds left and Iowa wins its ninth game of the season, 100-98.

Panthers roll over Iowa men

I knew Iowa would have a tough matchup against the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Panthers Saturday in Des Moines.
UNI has talent, depth and a couple of former West High Trojans that would probably be Hawkeyes if Fran McCaffery had offered them.
Jeremy Morgan, a sophomore for UNI, is a starter and played 14 minutes against Iowa, scoring seven points and grabbing three rebounds.
Iowa only had one scholarship when Jeremy was coming out of high school and Peter Jok was signed by the Hawks.
Peter came off the bench playing 20 minutes, scoring four points and had four rebounds Saturday.

Rivalry week

Iowa State came to town last week as the Hawkeyes hosted the Cyclone women Thursday and the men on Friday.
The women got it started by beating a good Iowa State team, 76-67, last Thursday.
They were led by a freshman and the bench coming through.
Whitney Jennings continues to come up big when it counts.
The 5’5” freshman from Indiana had two steals and was 3-4 from the free throw line in the last minute to help the Hawks win.
I really like the poise Whitney shows in the early part of the season.

Cyclones make shots, sink Hawks

Iowa’s men opened the week with a 67-44 win over Alcorn State on Tuesday at Carver and then got smoked by Iowa State 90-75 on Friday.
The Hawkeyes had balanced scoring with Aaron White and Jarrod Uthoff leading the way with 15 and 13 points respectively in the win over Alcorn.
Aaron played only 23 minutes, Jarrod 20.
I know this wasn’t a big time team that the Hawkeyes beat as Alcorn State is now 1-6.
These games are important as Iowa still needs to develop depth.
Dominique Uhl has a tremendous upside and needs to see more playing time.

Repeat of 1982 Peach Bowl?

Last Saturday they had a replay of the Tennessee-Iowa Peach Bowl in 1982 on channel 9.2.
The Hawkeyes, led by sophomore quarterback Chuck Long, finished the 1982 season 8-4, 6-2 in the Big Ten.
They lost their first two games to Nebraska (42-7) and Iowa State (19-7), then won the next eight of 10.
Tennessee scored first, but Chuck came out firing, completing his first 11 passes.
Chuck hooked up with Dave Moritz for a 57 yard touchdown pass as Iowa scored 21 points in the second quarter to take a 21-7 halftime lead.

Scherff wins Outland Trophy

I’m going to talk about something more positive... Brandon Scherff.
Brandon became the fourth Hawkeye to win the Outland Trophy award.
Calvin Jones won it in 1955, Alex Karras in 1957 and Robert Gallery.
I was only three years old when Alex won his award but I remember him playing for the Detroit Lions in the ‘60s.
Can you believe that Alex was runner-up to the Heisman Trophy in 1957?

Statement game

The Hawkeye men’s basketball team had two games last week, with a big 60-55 win at North Carolina.
The Hawks also beat Maryland-Baltimore County, 77-47, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday.
I have to admit I wasn’t too confident on the Hawkeyes’ chances at North Carolina because of the shooting problems of their guards.
I thought the big guys down low would hold their own, but if the guards were still in a slump, Iowa would have a tough time against the Tar Heels.

Heartbreak and disappointment

When I looked at the schedule and the returning players the Iowa Hawkeye football team had coming back this season, I thought there was a good chance the Hawks could win nine or 10 games.
If they would have scored three more points against Wisconsin or one more in regulation against Nebraska they would have... but they didn’t and with the 37-34 overtime loss to Nebraska Friday at Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeyes fell to 7-5.
That’s really disappointing.
When Iowa was up 24-7 with 8:45 left in the third quarter I thought there was no way the Cornhuskers come back.

Hawkeye Sports

Hawkeye men go 3-0

The Hawkeye men’s basketball team bounced back from two losses in New York and won three games in Carver-Hawkeye Arena last week.
They opened up with a 77-61 win over Pepperdine on Monday. They beat Northern Illinois 70-49 on Wednesday and handled Longwood 77-44 Saturday.
Aaron White led the Hawks with 17 against Pepperdine. Anthony Clemmons and Aaron had 14 versus Northern Illinois while Aaron came up with 19 against Longwood.
For the season, Aaron leads the team averaging 16.7 points per game followed by Jarrod Uthoff who averages 11.6.
