Stahle leads Spartans into 9th year

Junior varsity likely to have full schedule

SOLON– The numbers are up.
And that’s a good thing.
Adam Stahle, going into his ninth year of coaching the Solon boys’ golf team, has about 43 kids on his roster entering the spring season.
“This is the largest group that I’ve had,” Stahle said.
A sizable group of freshmen, for the second year in a row, and 30 returning players have swelled the ranks to the point a junior varsity (JV) coach, Scott Wolfe, will be officially added.

Red Vespa owners propose outdoor service for Main Street

Council members leery of losing parking

SOLON– Would the City be willing to take another step toward developing the culture of Main Street by temporarily sacrificing parking spots to allow for outdoor food service?
The owners of Red Vespa Pizzeria and Wine Bar were on the agenda for the March 16 Solon City Council meeting to find out.
Red Vespa owners Aziz and Angie Longou were at the council session with a proposal to provide seasonal outdoor service by leasing a single Main Street parking spot in front of their business.
“It makes people want to go there,” Aziz Longou told council members. “Just because of the atmosphere.”

Gustin changing from Spartan to Hawkeye

Volleyball head coach joining UI staff as volunteer assistant

SOLON– Solon’s loss will be the University of Iowa’s gain.
Peter Gustin, the head coach of Solon’s varsity volleyball program, has accepted a position as a volunteer assistant with the Hawkeyes.
Gustin became Solon’s head coach after the unexpected departure of coach Kurt Trout at the beginning of the 2012 season. Trout had led the Lady Spartans to their first-ever tournament appearance in 2011.
Under Gustin, the Solon girls reached the tournament final three straight years, winning the 3A championship in 2014.

Solon committee pitches $550,000 project to council

One percent-ish raised, 99 percent to go

SOLON– What at first was a trickle is now a babbling brook.
Armed with concept images, firmer cost estimates and plans for fundraising, members of a splash pad committee pitched all three to the Solon City Council at a March 2 meeting.
The group is looking to build momentum and compound the $5,000 already raised for the $550,000 potential project.

Third time the charm for Solon

Spartans earn state tournament berth with 49-42 substate win over Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS– Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing doubled down and won big.
In the first two meetings of the regular season between the Solon and Mount Vernon basketball teams, Mustang senior Connor Herrmann scored 24 and 29 points. Both were lopsided losses for the Spartans, who were outscored by a combined 44 points in the two games.
“He destroyed us the first two games,” Pershing said.
In the Class 3A Substate 4 final Monday night at the U.S. Cellular Center, Pershing was determined not to let it happen again.

Spartans hitting the bullseye

Solon Archery Team heads to Des Moines this weekend for state tournament

SOLON– Another Solon team is heading to state.
A good portion of the Solon Archery Team will head to the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines this weekend to participate in the 2016 Iowa National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament.
“This is our third year and it’s really gone great,” enthused head coach Gary Mechtensimer. “These kids are fantastic.”

Enquiring minds want to know

Lakeview Elementary students dive into science projects

SOLON– Civilized humanity has always liked to put things on display.
The Great Expositions and World’s Fairs prominently displayed the latest in future thinking and scientific wonder.
That inquisitive spirit lived on, in part, at the Lakeview Elementary Science Fair, held Saturday, Jan. 30, in Lakeview’s large gym.
Inside the event, sponsored by Lakeview’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), 78 students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade manned nearly 60 exhibits.

Council says yes to golf cart changes

Carts to be allowed on city streets all year, weather permitting

SOLON– There was only one question remaining– whether or not to allow golf carts on Highway 382 (Main Street) in Solon.
Solon’s council members already verbally consented to two other major revisions to the city’s golf cart ordinance: a requirement for a city license plate, and the elimination of the seasonal April 1 to Oct. 31 operating period.
But questions regarding Highway 382 prompted a lengthy discussion at a Feb. 3 council meeting.

Lynn Morris appointed to Solon City Council

City quickly fills seat vacated by Grover

SOLON– The “No Vacancy” sign has been turned back on.
At a Jan. 6 Solon City Council meeting, Mayor Steve Stange read a letter of resignation from council member Casey Grover.
By the Jan. 20 meeting, newly-appointed member Lynn Morris was sworn into office.
Morris, 52, has been a resident of Solon since 2003, and recently served a term on the city’s Board of Adjustment.
During the same Jan. 6 meeting in which Grover’s resignation was announced, council members approved a motion to appoint a replacement.

City budget work off to good start

12% increase in assessed value boosts city’s 2016-17 budget numbers

SOLON– Happy days are here again.
After several years of slogging through tough budget times, the finances for the City of Solon are looking positive for the 2016-17 fiscal year.
The overall city tax rate may even drop a little bit.
A 12 percent increase in assessed value is expected to soothe the sting from a multifamily residential rollback, and early indications show projected revenues are outpacing expenses, according to City Administrator Cami Rasmussen.

Not so much

Tanner Wymer’s visitation was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and we planned to be at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon right when it started.
We’ve known Brad and Marcy Wymer since about the same time we moved to Solon almost 20 years ago. Their son, Jordan, and our son, Kale, were buddies when they were much younger, not much more than preschoolers.
So we got to know the family a little, and over time you would see the parents of your kids’ friends on a regular basis, because your kids weren’t old enough to drive on their own.

Council ranking upcoming projects

City begins review of capital improvements list

SOLON– Solon’s city council is making its list and checking it twice.
The city’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is a compilation of significant wants and needs for the community, annually reviewed by the members of the city council as budget time approaches.
