Lynn Morris appointed to Solon City Council

City quickly fills seat vacated by Grover

SOLON– The “No Vacancy” sign has been turned back on.
At a Jan. 6 Solon City Council meeting, Mayor Steve Stange read a letter of resignation from council member Casey Grover.
By the Jan. 20 meeting, newly-appointed member Lynn Morris was sworn into office.
Morris, 52, has been a resident of Solon since 2003, and recently served a term on the city’s Board of Adjustment.
During the same Jan. 6 meeting in which Grover’s resignation was announced, council members approved a motion to appoint a replacement.

City budget work off to good start

12% increase in assessed value boosts city’s 2016-17 budget numbers

SOLON– Happy days are here again.
After several years of slogging through tough budget times, the finances for the City of Solon are looking positive for the 2016-17 fiscal year.
The overall city tax rate may even drop a little bit.
A 12 percent increase in assessed value is expected to soothe the sting from a multifamily residential rollback, and early indications show projected revenues are outpacing expenses, according to City Administrator Cami Rasmussen.

Not so much

Tanner Wymer’s visitation was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and we planned to be at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon right when it started.
We’ve known Brad and Marcy Wymer since about the same time we moved to Solon almost 20 years ago. Their son, Jordan, and our son, Kale, were buddies when they were much younger, not much more than preschoolers.
So we got to know the family a little, and over time you would see the parents of your kids’ friends on a regular basis, because your kids weren’t old enough to drive on their own.

Council ranking upcoming projects

City begins review of capital improvements list

SOLON– Solon’s city council is making its list and checking it twice.
The city’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is a compilation of significant wants and needs for the community, annually reviewed by the members of the city council as budget time approaches.

New look for Solon Legion

New windows, flooring caps year of big improvements

SOLON– Ask and ye shall receive.
It was time for some updates at the Solon American Legion, and thanks to an outpouring of support from a variety of sources, Stinocher Post 460 underwent a facelift in 2015.
“If you haven’t been in this Legion in the last two or three months, you’re in for a big surprise,” said Legion Finance Officer Curt Phillips. “There’ve been an awful lot of improvements done here within the last year.”

From Cyclone to Spartan

Lisa Bishop takes over as head hoops coach of the varsity Lady Spartans

SOLON– Normally, she would be a Cyclone in Hawkeye country, but now, Lisa Bishop is a Spartan.
Bishop, 33, has taken the reins of the Solon varsity girls basketball team, and prepared to open the 2015-2016 season Nov. 24 at Vinton-Shellsburg.
But it almost didn’t happen.
She was pregnant with her third child, Zeke (now 7 months old) when the position of head coach for the Lady Spartans was brought to her attention.

Draft Comprehensive Plan envisions future Solon

Council, P&Z to hold joint session to review planning document

SOLON– What are Solon’s goals for a better future?
For the most part, to keep doing what the community has already been doing.
A draft version of the city’s new Comprehensive Plan was unveiled at a public meeting held Nov. 9 at Solon City Hall, and the new guide contains a new strategic plan which includes an emphasis on making the city more accessible to its residents.
The Comprehensive Plan was prepared by MSA Professional Services over the course of 2015, and was presented to the Solon Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission at a Nov. 11 meeting.

No UTVs, says council

Revisions to golf cart ordinance tabled

SOLON– A majority of council members had too many concerns about safety and enforcement regarding a proposed ordinance to allow utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) on Solon city streets.
Councilors Mark Krall, Dale Snipes and Steve Duncan voted against the draft ordinance presented at the Nov. 4 meeting, and the proposed law was defeated by a 2-3 margin.
Council members tabled consideration of revisions to the law that allows golf carts on city streets, which was also on the agenda for possible action.

Hard work and kindness:

Former NFL player and bestselling author visits Solon Middle School with a message about the importance of reading

SOLON– Former NFL player and current young adult novelist Tim Green sometimes speaks in CAPITAL letters.
Green, a former defensive end for the Atlanta Falcons from 1986 to 1993, used his interest in sports and reading to weave together a message about the importance of books and hard work for a packed audience of students and teachers in the Solon Middle School gymnasium Oct. 28.
The dynamic speaker and author stressed to his audience the importance of books as a gateway to other worlds and experiences, and as the training room for their minds.

City creates new janitor position

Part-time job will serve city buildings

SOLON– Good help can be hard to find.
Sometimes you just have to do it yourself.
After over a year of trying to find a suitable contractor, the City of Solon is creating a new part-time janitorial position to provide services for the city hall, library and fire station.
“This has been a long process,” City Administrator Cami Rasmussen told city council members at a regular meeting Oct. 21.

Freedom Rock design set in stone

Ray “Bubba” Sorensen creating 99-county canvas

SOLON– “This is kind of a way to have a job and also keep my life in perspective,” Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II said, taking a break from work on the Solon Freedom Rock. “And be thankful I’m an American.”
Sorensen, 36, of Greenfield, was close to putting the finishing touches on the Solon Freedom Rock, one of 99 planned for the state of Iowa.
Solon’s rock, representing Johnson County, is No. 38.

Another connection planned along Hoover Trail

Funding will determine whether construction starts in spring

SOLON– If you like to ride bicycles, there’s nothing but good news.
The 5.8-mile missing link between two extensive Iowa trail systems might be completed as soon as 2018.
The plans to extend the Hoover Trail from Ely to Solon are progressing and Johnson County Conservation Department Program Manager Brad Friedhof thinks if all goes well, the first phase of the project could go out to potential bidders next spring.
The Conservation Department hosted a second informational meeting on the project at Solon City Hall Aug. 26 and there was a lot to share.
