UPDATED: Volunteers still needed to sandbag in Solon

Meet at public works building

SOLON– Residents of Solon continued to sandbag Wednesday evening as rapidly rising waters closed in on the city’s sewage plant.
Volunteers are still needed.
Report to the new Solon Public Works building on Stinocher Street. Bring gloves and wear a hat.
Severe thunderstorms with driving winds dumped as much as 5 inches of rain on the Solon area Wednesday, and by mid-afternoon, Randall Park was submerged by a swollen Mill Creek. The city’s wastewater treatment facility is located across the creek from the park.

SOLON– Firefighters from Solon, North Liberty, Ely and Iowa City responded Thursday morning to find an industrial condominium on Solon’s south side partially engulfed in flames.

Council moving ahead with city hall design

SOLON– A Cedar Rapids engineering firm has been selected to design Solon’s new city hall.
At a March 20 meeting, city council members approved $3,050 in architectural services for Design Dynamics, Inc. for a design concept, and a full presentation was tentatively scheduled for special council meeting Monday, March 15.

Solon district budget back on track

Upgrades: enhanced security planned for middle school

SOLON– Things are looking up for the Solon school district’s budget.
Even though the state has not yet set the allowable growth rate for Iowa schools, it appears the Solon district will be able to lower its tax levy and take on a half-million dollars in summer improvements.
At a meeting Monday, March 11, members of the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education set an April 8 public hearing date for the $20 million 2013-2014 budget.

City tearing down candy store

Council votes for demolition and new construction for city hall

SOLON– The continuing story of Solon’s quest for a new city hall entered a new chapter last week as council members voted to demolish the building it purchased at 100 W. Main St.
Engineering estimates for the renovation of the former candy store had come in at $1.8 million, almost three times the $650,000 available for the project. And when city hall committee members asked for revised numbers that reflected the actual budget, they learned they couldn’t fully finish the main level.

City hall pricing goes through roof

Early pricing for concept plan causes sticker shock for Solon officials

SOLON– After a bout with sticker shock, it’s back to the drawing board for Solon’s proposed new city hall.
Early conceptual cost estimates for the renovation of 100 W. Main St. came in at nearly three times the amount the city expected to spend, according to city administrator Cassandra Lippincott.
That was a month ago, and now the city committee which has been working on the project has asked the engineering firm it hired to try to trim back the projected price tag.
