Migrating to Mexico

Project documents butterflies

KENT PARK— Every fall, monarch butterflies pass through Johnson County on their way to their winter home in Mexico, a journey of over 2,000 miles. Scientifically inclined minds have often pondered where the little wonders come from, where they go and what, if anything, affects their journey. During an afternoon event Saturday, Sept. 12, at F. W. Kent Park, 65 of the colorful fliers were tagged and documented as they headed south.
Kristen Morrow, a Naturalist with Johnson County Conservation, led the event for 80 people.

Buona sera, Solon

New restaurant brings Italy to Main Street

SOLON– There are many things to love about Italy: its wine, its warm people, its masterful historic artists, bold history and ancient architecture.
Its food.
The Red Vespa Italian Restaurant now brings some of those fine Italian qualities to the heart of downtown Solon.
Aziz and Angie Longou are the couple behind the venture, the long-anticipated eatery that opened Aug. 25. Aziz has many years of experience as a chef and restaurateur in the Corridor area.
“I started cooking in 1978, and I think I did a good job,” said Aziz.

Strumming away the road work blues

Jeffrey C. Capps performed his roots/rock music for the crowd gathered at Penn Landing Aug. 30 for a party to celebrate the end of construction on Highway 965 in North Liberty. The event featured live music, activities for children and the regular farmers’ market. For more photos of the event, see page A8. (photo by Doug Lindner)

The vision is developing for Hoover Nature Trail link

Improvements to Ely Road intersection with Hwy. 382 still undetermined

SOLON– If you like to ride bicycles, there’s nothing but good news.
The 5.8-mile missing link between two extensive Iowa trail systems might be completed as soon as 2018.
The plans to extend the Hoover Trail from Ely to Solon are progressing and Johnson County Conservation Department Program Manager Brad Friedhof thinks if all goes well, the first phase of the project could go out to potential bidders next spring.
The Conservation Department hosted a second informational meeting on the project at Solon City Hall Aug. 26 and there was a lot to share.

Utility work delays Tiffin’s Ireland Avenue project

TIFFIN– Nobody enjoys traffic delays; sometimes least of all, those who help create them.
As is the case in Tiffin, where U.S. Highway 6 has seen construction crews since June 1, and the Ireland Avenue extension project has been an ongoing endeavor for nearly eight years now.
City officials are as eager to get to the end of the road construction as commuters.

West wins annual battle against City High, 3-2

We like the spike!

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– They took back The Spike.
West High’s Women of Troy took possession of the traveling trophy, consisting of a golden railroad spike mounted on a plaque, after defeating rival City High, 3-2, in varsity volleyball Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the West High gymnasium. The City High Little Hawks won the coveted trophy last year, by the same margin, in their gym.
City was ranked No. 1 in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union while the Women of Troy were 10th.

Unusual suspects

Five Solon community leaders to be incarcerated for a good cause

SOLON– They did nothing wrong, but on Sept. 23, five members of the Solon community will be sent to jail.
It’s up to supporters of Solon’s Old Gold Diner to bail them out.
The five men are donating their time so that others may continue to enjoy a hot noon-time meal each weekday.

The petals of where we belong

A community doesn’t exist merely in the present moment– its past and future are chapters in the story as well. A ‘rootedness’ or ‘sense of place’ connects the chapters with meaning in our lives. The great events and the small become our history.

Spartans rebound with win

Four TDs for Halston Durr in 35-14 win over Mount Vernon

SOLON– As the Spartans shook hands following their 21-13 loss with the Regina, a fog enveloped them like the smoke from a battle.
The stage would be different as the Spartans (0-1) met the Mount Vernon Mustangs (1-0) at Spartan Stadium on Sept. 4.
The Mustangs came to the game after putting up 285 yards of rushing and 82 yards receiving to defeat Marion, 37-14, last Friday.

School board candidates make their case

School election Tuesday, Sept. 8

SOLON– Two seats are up for grabs during the Sept. 8 election for the Solon Community School District Board of Directors.
All four candidates in the race have provided the Solon Economist with responses to three questions about their background, their views on the district and their hopes in serving the district should they be elected to the board. Their responses appear unedited in this week’s edition.

Bee-eee-eef Days?

Passing bee swarm finds home at Beef Days

SOLON- Another year means another successful Solon Beef Days, but preparation for this year’s festivities became abuzz when a swarm of bees was spotted near the kids’ corner on Dubuque Street. Ron Puettmann, a Lake Macbride State Park manager and local bee keeper, was one of the first ones to notice the swarm.
“We were setting up the kids’ corner and I happened to look up and see a whole bunch of bees in the air, so we had everyone back away,” Puettmann said.

Lights... Camera... Lightning!

Weather delays football opener, but Regals hold on for 21-13 win over Spartans

IOWA CITY– As the wave of Solon players rolled down the steps toward the field Friday, Aug. 28, there was a definite energy in the air.
The fans felt it. The players were poised, ready to start the football season.
Players for Solon and Iowa City Regina took to their respective sides of the field and the captains strode out for the coin toss.
It was time… and then it was postponed 30 minutes due to lightning.
The players left the field, not to return.
