Women of Troy fall to Lions in Regional Tennis Final

WATERLOO– The West High Women of Troy dropped a Class 2A Regional Final Tennis Match to the Linn-Mar Lions Saturday, May 21 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. The Lions took the match 5-3 to advance to the first round of State Team Tournament competition on Monday, May 23 in Eldridge.
West defeated Cedar Falls 5-1 in a Semifinal Match earlier in the day to advance to the showdown with the Lions. Emma Koch, Abby Jans, Kaily Speer, Vivian Mitchell and Elise Chang posted wins in the singles match against Cedar Falls.
The Lions defeated West a few weeks ago 8-1 in Iowa City.

Jung is MVC Valley Division Athlete of the Year

IOWA CITY– West High’s Jiung Jung was named the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Valley Division’s 2016 boy’s tennis Athlete of the Year. The conference released its picks for All-Division tennis honors on Wednesday, May 18.
West Coach Mitch Gross earned Division Coach of the Year honors while the West High Trojans were named the division’s Team Champion with a 14-0 record.
Jung, a junior, put up a 14-0 match record, a 28-1 set record and a 168-32 game record and was a unanimous First Team pick.

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans embark on their continuing quest for a state baseball championship as they take to the diamond for the 2016 season. Under 23-year head coach Charlie Stumpff, the team has been the runner-up four times: 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2015 but has yet to win the title. Stumpff and company accrued a 34-12 record overall last season and went 20-6 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

TIFFIN– Brent Henry and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team will have to do without six seniors who graduated with the Class of 2015 (Chase Rourke, Travis Bowman, Killian Walters, Tanner Bandy, Nile Rourke and Stephen Jensen).
Cappy’s (the un-official mascot of Clipper Baseball) Crew, led by these six men, posted a 21-19 record overall and 14-16 WaMaC conference showing last season.

Annual Bob Parker Blood Drive May 26 held in his honor

NORTH LIBERTY– Robert D. “Bob” Parker, 63, of North Liberty, passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s life was held Wednesday, May 18, at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City, with Father Ed Fitzpatrick officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The North Liberty Fire Fighters Foundation or to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

School board boundary talks far from over

After votes on several motions, discussion lingers

IOWA CITY– The atmosphere was tense as the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Directors approved boundary changes at the elementary and secondary levels.
The Board has been discussing attendance zones at recent work sessions and had created a set of maps for a vote at its May 10 meeting. Most directors agreed time was of the essence, and that families needed the information about where their kids would attend school.

Goats on the go at Penn Elementary

NORTH LIBERTY– There were some new kids on the block at Penn Elementary last weekend, but they didn’t stick around for long.
On Saturday, May 14, Ames-based company Goats on the Go released around 30 goats, mostly adult females with some juveniles, on the south side of Penn to clear weeds and underbrush on school property. The Iowa City Community School District contracted signed a contract with the company in March for $2,225 and 1.5 acres cleared between Penn and Shimek elementary schools.

Oxford incident prompts investigation

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is interested in speaking with the person who interacted with a child in Oxford Thursday, May 12.
The sheriff’s office received a report of a male subject in a vehicle who approached a child in Oxford and asked her if she would like to make some money. The child ran home and notified her parents who reported the incident. This occurred May 12 in an alley behind the Depot convenience store at approximately 3:30 p.m.

NL American Legion Memorial Day schedule

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Memorial Day flag raising schedule will be: 9:30 a.m. Ridgewood Cemetery.
Following the ceremony at Ridgewood, the Legion representatives will travel to Club 76, at 3949 Mehaffey Bridge Road, for another flag ceremony.
At 1:30 p.m., East Overlook at Coralville Lake, and at 6 p.m. at the Sutliff Bridge.

CCA Masters golf outing/fundraiser June 24

AMANA– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Masters Golf Outing is a fundraising event for scholarships and endowments for CCA students. The outing will be held Friday, June 24, at the Amana Colonies Golf Course, 451 U Ave. There is a $100 per player or $400 per four-person team entry fee that can be paid the day of the tournament.

Apply to serve on city board by May 20

NORTH LIBERTY– On July 1 each year, new terms begin on several City of North Liberty boards and commissions, and you are invited to take this opportunity to volunteer your time to serve. Applications are available at the city administration building at 3 Quail Creek Cir. or for download on the city’s website and must be turned in by May 20. The city council will make appointments at its June 14 meeting for terms that will begin on July 1.

City announces Memorial Day hours

NORTH LIBERTY– Due to Memorial Day, some offices will be closed and city service hours altered over the holiday weekend. City Hall and other city offices will be closed Monday, May 30.
The North Liberty Community Library will be closed Monday, May 30. However, unlike previous summers, the library will be open on Sundays through the summer from 1-4 p.m.
The North Liberty Recreation Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 28, Sunday, May 29, and Monday, May 30.
