Just Tri! Fifth Annual Youth Triathlon Aug. 7 at NLRC

NORTH LIBERTY– Tri-Fit Agape and the North Liberty Aquatic Center will host North Liberty’s annual youth triathlon: Just Tri! on Sunday, Aug. 7. Kids of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to swim, bike and run, with participant awards handed out upon completion. Participants must have a helmet for the bike portion to participate. The event is for participation only; times will not be recorded. Registration is required for the age group the child will be on race day. There is no rain date. The fee is $25 (resident) and $30 (non-resident). The transition opens at 7:15 a.m.

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity softball team advanced to a Class 4A Region 5 semifinal game with Oskaloosa after wiping out the Marion Indians, 10-0, in five innings in the quarterfinal round Thursday, July 7, in Oxford.
The Clippers were the visitors in the contest and took full advantage of having the first at-bat with two runs in the top of the first inning, followed by one in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth.

IC West beats CR Washington 11-1 in regional semifinal

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 11-1 in a five-inning Class 5A Region 5 semifinal game Saturday, July 9, on the West High diamond.
The win advanced West to a Tuesday, July 12, regional final game against Davenport West in Iowa City with the winner heading for the 2016 state softball championships in Fort Dodge.

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans’ record improved to 27-6 with a sweep of cross-town rival City High in a two-day doubleheader Monday and Tuesday, July 4 and 5.
The Trojans put on their own fireworks show during an afternoon matinee on Independence Day with the 11-1 pounding of the Little Hawks at home. City put up one run in the top of the third, which was answered with two West High runs in the bottom of the inning. A seven-run barrage from the Trojan bats occurred in the fifth with two more runs in the sixth.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ varsity baseball team finished the regular season with a home doubleheader sweep of South Tama Friday, July 8. Capy’s Boys knocked off the Trojans 10-0 and 12-6. The pair of wins improved CCA’s record to 19-19 and marked the third straight year the team finished at .500 or above. Coach Brent Henry noted, “Seniors Jake Neubauer and Robby Swails are members of the winningest four-year stretch in the program’s history.”

Cappy’s Boys split with Stormin’ Pointers

CENTER POINT– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team, known as “Cappy’s Boys” after their unofficial mascot, moved to a 17-19 record with a split against the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana in a doubleheader Tuesday, July 5, in Center Point.
The Pointers pulled off a lead change in the sixth inning of game one to take a 6-5 win, but the Clippers regrouped and pounded the Pointers, 15-3, in a six-inning nightcap.

Of the 13 food vendors serving at North Liberty Blues & BBQ presented by South Slope Cooperative Communications, two are as local as it gets, but you won’t find their fare in a restaurant.
T.C. Bonez Catering & BBQ, located off Mehaffey Bridge Road near Club 76, has been smoking Iowa-grown meats since 2003, and owner Todd Carr makes it a point to never miss a Blues.
“I’m so excited,” he said last week. “I wish it was here this weekend.”

Vote early in ICCSD special election

IOWA CITY– Early voting for the July 19 Iowa City School District special election began Tuesday, July 5, at 7:45 a.m. at the Auditor’s Office, 913 S. Dubuque St.
Early voting at the Auditor’s Office will be available weekdays from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through the close of business Monday, July 18.
There will also be two satellite voting sites on Sunday, July 17.
· Coralville Public Library, noon to 4 p.m.
· Iowa City Public Library, noon to 5 p.m.

North Liberty population count official

One-quarter of mostly white residents aged 25-34, 10.5 percent under five years old

NORTH LIBERTY– A special census conducted in the City of North Liberty last fall is finally official.
According to a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau to the city, the population of North Liberty was 18,299 as of last October– up 36 percent from 13,374 in 2010. The new housing count was 7,551.
Now that the city has received the certified population count, North Liberty will receive increases in state funding distributed per capita, such as road-use tax.

NORTH LIBERTY– Sixteen-year-old Julia Love thought she would drop out of high school. Now, she’s planning for college.
She changed the story of her education with the help of Iowa Connections Academy, a tuition-free public school done entirely online. Love completes 100 percent of her coursework from her home in North Liberty. After years of struggling to manage debilitating anxiety in a traditional classroom setting, online study has helped her gain a new confidence and self-assuredness.

Tiffin citizens speak out against new development

Council approves rezoning despite storm water runoff, traffic concerns

NORTH LIBERTY– Just when the Tiffin City Council thought it had a solution to ongoing traffic concerns along Deer View Avenue, council members were again met with civil opposition.
Around 20 community members attended a June 28 council meeting when a public hearing was scheduled for a multi-rezoning ordinance to accommodate Tiffin Heights East, a new west-side subdivision proposed by developer Jason Dumont of The Boulders LLC in Solon. Dumont was also the developer of the original Tiffin Heights.
