Dance for a Difference fundraiser scores big

NORTH LIBERTY– It was a vivacious scene in Liberty High School’s auxiliary gym on the afternoon of Sunday, April 22.
About 100 dancers signed up for Dance for a Difference, which ran from noon to 4 p.m. The event featured a DJ, face painting, food, a costume dance raffle, a silent auction and a teacher dance at 3 p.m.
“Dance for a Difference was amazing. Everyone was dancing, singing and just sharing their love with one another,” remarked Liberty High senior and Difference Maker Madi Barta, following the event.

Lane reduction: Penn, west of Alexander

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, crews will begin work on trail upgrades and extensions along the south side of Penn Street, between Kansas Avenue and Alexander Way. This work will require the closing of one eastbound lane of traffic on Penn Street. The intermittent closure will be between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and is expected to last up to three weeks.

North Liberty celebrates Older Americans Month

NORTH LIBERTY– This May is Older Americans Month and, in celebration, the City of North Liberty is hosting new and existing nutritional, social and educational programs for local seniors the entire month. The theme is “Engage at Every Age,” so the goal is to encourage seniors to try new things and to learn ways to give back to the community via volunteering.

NORTH LIBERTY– Cyclers, joggers and dog owners of North Liberty rejoice.
In the name of improving pedestrian accessibility, the city is currently in the process of adding three 8-foot-wide segments to its pedestrian trail network, with many more approved for development in the coming years.

West Penn Street

Perhaps the most critical addition currently underway, this trail will span from Kansas Avenue, link to the Penn Street pond trail and finally meet with the North Ridge Trail just east of Alexander Way. Completion is anticipated in early to mid-June.

NORTH LIBERTY– A local service center and dealership has recently extended its radius as the Junge Auto Group makes a new home in North Liberty. The new location opened in March with plans for a grand opening celebration starting Friday, May 18.

Junge Ford North Liberty carries on the legacy of a longtime Oxford business, Carter Ford. Junge Auto Group purchased the reputable dealership from Mary Ann Carter and Carole Hebl, the widow and daughter of former owner Ted Carter.

NL pantry golf tournament Friday, May 4

CORALVILLE– Registration is open for the North Liberty Community Pantry’s 8th Annual 4-Person Best Shot Golf Tournament held Friday, May 4.
Registration is at 7:30 a.m. with final check-in at 8:30 a.m. A shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. followed by a catered meal at 1 p.m. The tournament will take place at the Brown Deer Golf Club at 1900 Country Club Dr. in Coralville. The entry fee is $450 per team, prepaid. This includes a continental breakfast, green fees, a cart, a catered meal, driving range balls and team picture. A silent auction will also take place along with awards ceremony.

Changes to NL’s trash system this summer

NORTH LBERTY– Working with Johnson County Refuse, the contractor who has long provided service in North Liberty, the city approved a plan to modernize North Liberty’s refuse, recycling and curbside compost system, with heavy-duty wheeled carts and new options for residential customers. The fee for trash collection will be rolled in with the current city utility bill, with the city passing every dollar of the monthly service fee to Johnson County Refuse.

NORTH LIBERTY– For those looking to get involved in their city, serving on a volunteer board or commission is a great way to do so. Boards members and commissioners work with and advise staff, provide recommendations to council and can make a difference in many aspects of community development.

Ag classes coming to CCA

District last offered ag and FFA in the late 1970s

TIFFIN– Next year, blue corduroy jackets might be seen in the hallways of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School in Tiffin, identifying students enrolled in a brand new agricultural education program, which has also joined the Future Farmers of America (FFA).
CCA last offered agricultural classes in the late 1970s in partnership with Kirkwood Community College. However, the college dropped the program and the school district was unable to continue it. Interest in the curriculum and hopes for restarting the program laid dormant like seeds waiting for an opportunity to burst forth.

DES MOINES– Athletes from Clear Creek Amana, Liberty High and Iowa City West competed in the 109th edition of the Drake Relays held at Drake University in Des Moines from Thursday, April 26, through Saturday, April 28. Combined, the three schools competed in 21 events.

CCA boys win home Pacha Relays, girls take third

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys track and field coach Ben Robison described the annual Pacha Relays on Thursday, April 27, as a great night for his Clippers as they won their home meet, topping Mount Vernon, Benton Community, Solon and Williamsburg. The Creek Boys put up 146 team points for the championship while Mount Vernon was the runner-up squad with 103. Benton Community was third with 100; Solon was a distant 68 in fourth place while Williamsburg was seventh with 53 team points.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy remained unbeaten with an 11-0 overall record and 10-0 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) record after a trio of matches this past week.
The latest round of wins began Thursday, April 26, as Waterloo West visited Iowa City West after playing City High for a make-up of a weather postponement. The Women of Troy defeated the Wahawks, 9-0.
