NL Recreation Center to have short, long-term closures in different areas

NORTH LIBERTY– Due to the Just Tri youth triathlon, the swimming pool at the North Liberty Recreation Center will be closed to the public on Sunday, Aug. 2, until 11 a.m.
Organizers are still seeking additional volunteers to help with the event from 7:30-10 a.m. that morning. If interested, contact pool director Katie Gerot at 319-626-5716.

NL’s Eyestone to run for Iowa City school board

NORTH LIBERTY– Shawn Eyestone of North Liberty has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Iowa City Community School District’s Board of Education.
There are five open seats on the board to fill this fall. “I believe strongly that every student in our district deserves to have their specific needs addressed to the best of our ability,” Eyestone said. “Whether they are performing below grade level, above grade level, or have any other special needs, the students are the reason I am entering the race.”

NLYBS Fall Fun Ball emphasizes skills, partners with Diamond Dreams baseball, softball Academy

NORTH LIBERTY– For the fifth year in a row, North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) will be providing a fun, relaxed baseball/softball experience for boys and girls ages 6-13.
The season will consist of five sessions, on Monday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Aug. 31, skipping Sept. 7, and ending Oct. 5. Rain make-up will be Oct. 12.
The sessions will focus on skill development for half of the time and half will be spent scrimmaging.

NL dancers honored in competition

NORTH LIBERTY– Three dancers at Nicole Rock’s School of Dance, in North Liberty, were selected by the Talent On Parade competition group to attend the Talent on Parade National Dance Competition in St. Louis. They learned a jazz routine with a select group of students who were picked from across the country to perform at the national competition. The girls each also performed their solo routines and received high gold ratings.

Trojans pick off Prairie and head for state

5-2 win sends West to Des Moines for second year in a row

CEDAR RAPIDS– West High’s Trojans, ranked eighth in the state in Class 4A, knocked off fifth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie in a substate final game Wednesday, July 22, for the right to compete in the state baseball championships.
West took the 5-2 win at Prairie in front of a capacity crowd for its second consecutive state tournament campaign.

Six Clippers on WaMaC All-Conference softball teams

TIFFIN– The WaMaC high school athletic conference released its 2015 All-Conference softball teams Wednesday, July 15, with six Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers earning berths.
Benton Community’s Eric Stenberg earned the West Division Coach of the Year honors and his Bobcats won the conference with an 18-0 WaMaC showing and a 37-3 record overall. Center Point-Urbana was second in the final regular season standings at 13-5 and 26-13, with the Clippers third at 12-6 and 21-16.

NL school holds 2015 Girls on the Run program

NORTH LIBERTY– For girls who participate in the after-school program Girls on the Run, running is more than just a way to encourage healthy habits.
It’s a way to encourage a healthy sense of self-worth.
Esther Baker, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Eastern Iowa, has seen girls blossom through participating in the organization.
She recalled one student who came into the program with extremely low self-confidence. When given a compliment, she would respond self-deprecatingly and had difficulty interacting with the other girls and her coaches.

NLFD’s family-friendly fundraiser to be held Saturday, Aug. 22

NORTH LIBERTY– A summer tradition is heating up once again in North Liberty.
The North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) will host its annual Salute to Summer fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Bobbers Grill, 1850 Scales Bend Rd. NE, North Liberty.
The venue is perfect for the family-friendly event that encompasses everything from kids’ activities and games to a poker run, silent action and live music, said NLFD’s Rob DuBay, the chair for this year’s event.

School district officials anticipate effects of Branstad’s education veto

OXFORD— Governor Terry Branstad closed the 2015 legislative session by signing and vetoing a number of budget bills on Thursday, July 2. Included was a veto of $55.7 million in one-time money intended to supplement a 1.25 percent increase in state supplemental aid to school districts.

TIFFIN– Breaking the cycle of poverty is one of the biggest social issues facing our country and the world today; but that doesn’t mean little things can’t make a huge difference.
Owning a book, for example, is a simple propriety that many take for granted, but is not necessarily an equal opportunity.
Tiffin’s Grace United Methodist Church and the larger United Methodist Church (UMC) organization hope to change that through a recent initiative, “Change a Child’s Story.”

Local before- and after-school programs need DHS licensure to continue

ICCSD board requests alternate partnership proposals if city opts not to obtain license

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s before- and after-school programs in North Liberty and Coralville may be affected by a new Iowa law that requires school childcare programs to be licensed through the Department of Human Services.
During the school board’s July 14 meeting, the directors agreed the district should have a plan in place to make sure programs in the two cities will not be interrupted.

Gunshots reported outside Slim’s Saloon

Sheriff’s office seeking more information

According to a press release issued by the sheriff’s office Monday, an altercation was reported outside of Slim’s at approximately 1:10 a.m. Sunday morning, July 19. The release said a large group of people were involved in a fight, and at some point during the altercation, a pistol was brandished and discharged several times. No one was struck by any rounds.
