Raiders’ run ends Clippers’ season

Boys beat S. Tama, fall to Williamsburg on tournament trail

IOWA CITY— It was a familiar foe in a different setting as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers faced rival Williamsburg for the third time this season in a Class 3A Boys District Final game at Iowa City West High on Thursday, Feb. 26. The Raiders won 52-49 in January, 59-51 in early February and took Thursday’s contest 50-37. The win ended the season for the Clippers and sent Williamsburg to the Substate 5 battle, taking place on Monday, March 2, against Fort Madison in Muscatine for a chance at playing in the State Tournament.

County seeks towns’ support for Community ID program

NORTH LIBERTY– Will North Liberty be among the Johnson County cities that support a proposed Community ID program?
At the city council’s Feb. 10 meeting, Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert presented information and fielded questions about the program the county hopes to launch by June of this year.
Weipert also came seeking North Liberty’s financial support for the program’s start-up costs.
“That ship has sailed for us,” North Liberty councilor Chris Hoffman said. “We had a funding request last meeting that we had to turn down because the fund we pull from is depleted.”

Paying for progress

Tiffin approves five year CIP

TIFFIN– Make way for progress.
In January, the City of Tiffin adopted its most recent Capital Improvements Plan for fiscal years 2015 through 2020, and the to-do list is born of necessity, said Mayor Steve Berner.
“It includes needed projects. I don’t see much for wants until you reach years four or five, and those are there more as placeholders than as specific projects,” Berner said.

CCA and the school finance formula blues

Lingering uncertainty at state level leaves district guessing at budget

OXFORD — While legislators on both sides of the political aisle debate school aid funding, Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District Superintendent Tim Kuehl is sure of one thing: it won’t be enough.
Kuehl has been outspoken this year regarding Governor Terry Branstad’s proposal of a 1.25 percent increase in state supplemental aid to schools, often called “allowable growth.”

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council voted unanimously to appeal the amount of compensation awarded to a property owner in a disputed condemnation case.
The council discussed the case in closed session at its regular meeting, rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 23, before reconvening in open session to hold the vote. No comments were made in open session.

Coralville Lake Eagle Watch and Expo: attendance and eagles rebound

JOHNSON COUNTY– The weather was more cooperative this year for the third annual Coralville Lake Eagle Watch and Expo, held Feb. 7, at the Coralville Lake and North Central Junior High in North Liberty.
Last year, an early morning snowstorm and icy conditions kept attendance down, but this time, the sun was shining and the temperatures mild, bringing the best attendance the event has seen, including the birds.

Clipper girls go down at Mt. Pleasant

Quarterfinal loss ends season

MOUNT PLEASANT– Their season ended with a decisive loss on the road, but for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, it’s still a winning season; the first in at least a decade for the girls basketball program.
The Clippers took a 13-8 record on the road to Mount Pleasant for a Class 4A regional quarterfinal game against the 17-4, 14th-ranked Panthers and found themselves on the wrong side of a 52-39 final score.
Coach P. J. Sweeney’s Clippers took a slim 6-5 lead in the first quarter but were down by the same one-point margin, 12-11 at the half.
