Solon Trapshooting Team aims to win at state competitions

SOLON– From Friday, May 30 through Sunday, June 1, members of the Solon Spartan Trapshooting Team were in Cedar Falls participating in annual state level competitions. The team had an excellent showing and placed well in several award categories as they competed against more than 1,400 student athletes (and over 150 schools).

Lady Spartans sweep Anamosa, Beckman

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans have moved to 33-1 with doubleheader sweeps over Anamosa and Dyersville-Beckman last week.
The softball postseason begins Saturday, July 12, as Solon hosts either Marion or Dubuque Wahlert in a Class 4A Region 3 semifinal with a 7 p.m. start. The Region 3 final will be Tuesday, July 15, in Solon, also with a 7 p.m. start.
Solon moved up to No. 3 in the final 4A rankings issued July 3 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
The Lady Spartans out-scored Anamosa 22-0 in two games shortened by the mercy rule July 1 in Solon.

$25.5 million decision

Middle school, performing arts center go to ballot - Sept. 9

SOLON– It’s official.
As expected, the Solon school board has decided to place a $25.5 million bond referendum for a new middle school and performing arts center before district voters.
At a June 26 meeting, school board members accepted a 220-signature petition signed by residents of the district, and passed a resolution calling for a Tuesday, Sept. 9, special election.
It was an action the district had been working toward for months.

Our Lord’s Church marks 10th anniversary

Happy Birthday, Our Lord’s Church!

SOLON– In 2004, a small group of residents gathered at the Solon Public Library for the first service of a new church community.
Two years later, the new church had its own building and had established a record of community service that it continues today.
Our Lord’s Church will mark the first decade of its existence Sunday, July 13, with a public celebration at its 131 N. Market St. location, serving brats, burgers and hot dogs after its weekly service. Potato salad, baked beans, lemonade and cake will also be served.

Solon Booster Bash Golf Outing on Aug. 2 at Lake Macbride Golf Course

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club will be sponsoring the 14th annual Booster Bash Golf Outing on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Lake Macbride Golf Course. The event is open to anyone interested in supporting the student athletes of the Solon Community School District. This year’s fundraising proceeds will be used to purchase new equipment for the weight room.

Lakeview Elementary recognized as a model professional learning community by Solution Tree

SOLON– Lakeview Elementary was recently recognized by Solution Tree for its sustained success in raising student achievement. Lakeview Elementary’s successful implementation of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at WorkTM process was a major contributing factor in the improved achievement of its students.
PLCs are schools and districts in which educators recognize the key to improved learning for students is ongoing, job-embedded learning for the adults who serve those students. The three big ideas of a PLC call upon educators to:
