Soup, Hoops and Wrestling Extravaganza Friday, Nov. 20

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club is hosting its first annual Soup, Hoops and Wrestling soup dinner and winter kick-off on Friday, Nov. 20, at Solon High School. Come meet winter sports and activities participants. Ninth through 12th grade girls and boys basketball and wrestling teams will serve a soup dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m., team introductions and scrimmages to follow. The cost is $6 per person or $20 for a family of four. Bring a canned good donation and receive $2 off the admission price. The itinerary for the event will be as follows:

Old Gold Diner Christmas Tree Walk at stable Saturday, Dec. 5

SOLON– Solon’s Old Gold Diner will be hosting the first-ever Christmas Tree Walk at the Palmer House Stable Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Trees from different organizations, businesses and individuals or families will be on display, with entertainment throughout the day. A free will offering is requested, and proceeds will be shared with area non-profits, not including the Old Gold Diner.

Draft Comprehensive Plan envisions future Solon

Council, P&Z to hold joint session to review planning document

SOLON– What are Solon’s goals for a better future?
For the most part, to keep doing what the community has already been doing.
A draft version of the city’s new Comprehensive Plan was unveiled at a public meeting held Nov. 9 at Solon City Hall, and the new guide contains a new strategic plan which includes an emphasis on making the city more accessible to its residents.
The Comprehensive Plan was prepared by MSA Professional Services over the course of 2015, and was presented to the Solon Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission at a Nov. 11 meeting.

Senior Advocates host presidential forum at SMS Dec. 5

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates are scheduling a presidential political forum at the Solon Middle School auditorium Saturday, Dec. 5, from 1 until 4 p.m. to help clarify our choices.
Iowa’s caucus date is coming in a few months and there are still a lot of candidates vying for the top slot. The media, debates and talking heads are making the process somewhat confusing.
The Advocates will ask all the viable candidates of both parties to send a representative to the forum to discuss their candidates’ platforms and reasons for running.

Solon Optimist Club to sponsor essay contest for students

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon is encouraging area students to write a 700 to 800 word essay about the topic “Lead by Example: Reality or Fiction,” as part of the Optimist Iowa District Contest for the 2015-2016 year.
The Optimist Club of Solon will judge the local students’ essays based on content and presentation to determine the top winners. Winners will receive awards and the winning essays will be sent to the Zone level, and possibly the District level.
The contest is open to students under the age of 18 as of Oct. 1, 2015.

Our Lord’s Church annual Candy Sale Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4-5

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its annual Candy Sale Friday, Dec. 4, from 3-7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Featured will be homemade candy as well as crafts, decorations and other gift items.
The sale will be held at the church, located at 131 N. Market St.

No UTVs, says council

Revisions to golf cart ordinance tabled

SOLON– A majority of council members had too many concerns about safety and enforcement regarding a proposed ordinance to allow utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) on Solon city streets.
Councilors Mark Krall, Dale Snipes and Steve Duncan voted against the draft ordinance presented at the Nov. 4 meeting, and the proposed law was defeated by a 2-3 margin.
Council members tabled consideration of revisions to the law that allows golf carts on city streets, which was also on the agenda for possible action.

Stange, Prentice and Snipes re-elected

SOLON– It wasn’t much of a turnout.
With only 52 voters bothering to go to the polls (a 53rd cast an absentee ballot), Solon re-elected its incumbent mayor and two incumbent city council members in the Nov. 3 election.
Elected to four-year terms were Mayor Steve Stange and councilors Mark Prentice and Dale Snipes. Prentice was actually the top vote-getter with 49, while Stange and Snipes received 44. About ten percent of the voters wrote in a different candidate.

SHS presents “Annie” Nov. 13, 14, and 15

SOLON– Solon High School now presents “Annie, The Musical!” Performance dates are Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
Tickets go on sale Monday, Nov. 9, and Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 5-7 p.m. in the Solon Middle School Auditorium Lobby.
Gold seating is $12, silver seating is $9 and Bronze seating is $6. Checks may be made payable to Solon Drama Department.

City Loop Bus Tour Nov. 14

SOLON– The City Loop Bus Tours, conducted during Solon’s 175th Anniversary for returning alumni, were so popular the Senior Advocates are planning a city loop tour Saturday, Nov. 14, for anyone interested. The tour will originate at 10 a.m. at the Family Life Center parking lot across the street from the Solon United Methodist Church. Please call 318-624-2710 for reservations. A minimum of eight passengers is required. There is no cost for the tour, however donations are welcomed.

Solon American Legion Auxiliary and SAL Turkey dinner Nov. 15

SOLON– Solon American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion are sponsoring a turkey dinner on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Solon American Legion. The menu includes roast turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, sauerkraut, rye bread, cranberries, lemonade coffee, milk and dessert. The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for kids 6-12.
