SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Church will be hosting an Imagine No Malaria Pancake Supper on Sunday, April 27, from 5 until 7 p.m. in the Family Life Center across from the church.
The evening will feature live entertainment. The menu includes pancakes with a variety of toppings, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, fruit, juice, milk and coffee. A free will offering will be taken with all proceeds going to Imagine No Malaria, a charity whose goal is to end death and suffering from malaria by providing insecticide-treated bed nets to the people of Africa.

Referendum likely this fall, but new jail won’t be on it

IOWA CITY– The dilemma over the Johnson County Jail and Courthouse had the board of supervisors in meetings that at times were contentious late last year. After another failed bond issue last May, which would have built a justice center, combining additional courthouse space with a new jail, the supervisors have continued to battle over a variety of options.

Solon Girls send four to Drake Relays

Lady Spartans second at Jesse Day Relays

SOLON– Strong throws and strong sprinters boosted first and second place team finishes in two meets last week and helped send four Solon girls high school entries to the Drake Relays this week.
The Relays annually features the top college and world entries in track and field, but with an Iowa flavor. They have always included an Iowa high school program– even a grade school shuttle relay on the infield– to promote visibility of the sport over the three-day festival. Over 18,000 fans sell out Drake Stadium at $40 a ticket every ‘Relays Saturday’ for the final day of competition.

Boys nudged out of second place at Spartan Invite

SOLON– There will be lots of golfing for the next month, as the Solon Spartans swing through the bulk of their schedule.
Solon’s varsity boys golf squad will be back home next week for two home dates before heading into postseason tournaments.
“I feel this group has a lot of potential,” said head coach Adam Stahle. “A lot of kids put in time over the summer.”
Stahle said there are 29 high school boys out for golf, with three letter winners returning from last year– Jared Capouch, Josh Kleppe and Spencer Schaefer.

Boys second at Jesse Day Relays in Davenport

DAVENPORT– The Solon varsity boys track team had a strong showing in a meet held at Brady Street Stadium in Davenport last week, finishing second in a field of strong 4A and 3A schools.
The team scored well in field events, led by senior thrower Dalton Ferguson, taking first in the shot put with a throw of 56’1, and second in the discuss with a toss of 153’8. The long jump has become a strong event for Solon as well, with Zach Nunemaker finishing second on a leap of 21’1 and Halston Durr close behind in fourth at 20’2.

He did it HIS WAY

Randall bows out with few regrets

SOLON– Typically, when a long-tenured coach leaves an athletic program under a cloud of controversy, they say they want to focus on the positives and not dwell on the negatives.
Brad Randall, now the former Solon High School varsity boys’ basketball coach, is no exception.
With a winning record full of accomplishments, it’s easy for him to emphasize the highlights.
