Eight to state

Spartans advance solo and as a team for state wrestling

SOLON– Last November, a state wrestling dual appearance was in the back of the Spartans’ minds as they began a second season under the only coach to ever get them there back in 2001.
Three months later, it’s on the forefront.
After an overwhelming victory at home Tuesday, Feb. 7, over Saydel (70-12) and Mount Vernon (51-18), Solon advanced to the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) 2017 State Dual Tournament. They were scheduled to wrestle Sergeant Bluff-Luton in a 9 a.m. quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Spartans spoil CCA Senior Night

TIFFIN– The Solon Spartans fended off Clear Creek Amana (CCA) on the road Feb. 10, handing the Clippers an 82-50 varsity basketball loss on their Senior Night.
Solon broke open a tight game in the second quarter, outscoring CCA 21-10 on the way to a 36-22 halftime lead.

Lady Spartans end season against No. 10 Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON– They’ve probably seen enough of the Mustangs for now.
Solon’s varsity girls ended their basketball season with a 52-36 loss to Mount Vernon Feb. 11 in Mount Vernon.
The Lady Spartans had concluded the regular season Feb. 7 hosting the Mustangs in a 61-41 loss, then faced Mount Vernon again four days later in the Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinal.
Solon’s season closed out with an 8-14 record.

City mulls impact of TIF rebate for Main Street project

HPR applies for $350,00 to help build “121 on Main”

SOLON– They didn’t say yes, but they didn’t say no.
At a regular meeting Feb. 1, members of the Solon City Council directed City Administrator Cami Rasmussen to project the impact of between $125,000 and $200,000 in Tax Increment Finance (TIF) rebates over the span of five budget years for a proposed Main Street development.
The move was in response to a TIF application by HPR Investments LLC seeking $350,000, or 10 percent of the $3.5 million project cost, in assistance for “121 on Main,” a mixed-use two-story building slated to replace three Main Street residences.

SOLON– Their aim is true.
The Solon Spartan Archery team hosted its second annual tournament Saturday, Jan. 7, in the Solon High School gymnasium, finishing a strong second place and missing first place by only 12 points. Several individual archers were awarded medals in different divisions.

13 Spartans to district meet

More firsts for Solon wrestling program

WILLIAMSBURG– The Williamsburg mats have quickly become a place of firsts for the Solon varsity wrestling squad.
After securing their first-ever WaMaC conference title there in late January, the Spartans returned to Williamsburg Junior-Senior High School on Saturday, Feb. 4, to send 13 of 14 wrestlers through to districts.
“That’s the most ever for Solon,” said Head Coach Blake Williams. “It’s not very common.”

Lady Spartans win two in a row

SOLON– Make it two in a row for the Solon girls.
The Lady Spartan varsity basketball team swept the season series with West Delaware and avenged a loss earlier in the year at Maquoketa with a pair of WaMaC wins last week.
Solon used a 30-17 rebounding edge to push its way past West Delaware, 48-40, on the road Jan. 31, and built a double-digit lead it didn’t relinquish at home against Maquoketa Feb. 3 for a 63-44 victory.
The twin wins pushed the Lady Spartans’ record to 8-12 on the year with a single game on the schedule remaining hosting Mount Vernon Feb. 8.

No. 2 West Delaware outlasts Spartans

SOLON– The Spartans were within striking distance.
Down seven after the first quarter to undefeated West Delaware, Solon’s varsity boys tied the game up in the second quarter and were trailing by only three heading into the final eight minutes.
But the Hawks poured in 30 points in the final period to pull away from the Spartans Jan. 31 in Solon for a 69-57 win.
“We competed at a very high level versus the No. 2-ranked team in the state,” said Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing. “We had many opportunities to take control of the game, but West Delaware responded as good teams do.”

Cost of recycling to increase for Solon residents

Johnson County Refuse asks for help with transportation costs

SOLON– Council members are in it for the longer haul.
The members of the Solon City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance increasing the monthly recycling fee from $5.50 to $6.35 at a special meeting Jan. 25.
Sixty cents of the jump in price is due to the trucking of recyclables from Johnson County to Scott County, according to Johnson County Refuse owner Steve Smith.
Smith told council members at a Jan. 11 special meeting his local market for recyclables had changed dramatically in the last 18 months.

Lions hunt members

Scott Kleppe elected charter president of new service club

SOLON– Solon will soon be appointing a new lion tamer.
With the motto “We serve,” Lions Club International is poised to help over 30 local charter members create the Solon Centennial Lions Club.
Lions Club organizers visited Solon in mid-January to gauge interest in a new service organization, and on Friday, Jan. 20, the group’s first formal meeting was held at Solon City Hall.
“The response in this community has been fantastic,” said District Governor Paul Hain of Lone Tree, a 43-year member of the Lions. “None of you knew we were coming. We have been welcomed very warmly.”
