Pack taking shape as cross country hits midseason

Girls fourth, boys ninth at Solon invite

SOLON– Packs can be good in cross country. “It’s a sport where you are out there, running by yourself for 20-some minutes. You want to get up with someone you know; to push each other… to keep going. Then, it’s all about the team,” explained Solon Head Coach Emy Williams.

Spartans rally past Demons

Solon overcomes 15-0 deficit for victory over Washington

WASHINGTON– As is custom in Washington at Case Field, local Legion members began to raise the flag to the rat-a-tat of a snare drum roll and the band joined in with the National Anthem. The Washington Demons recognized service men Friday, Sept. 16, during the Class 3A District 5 game against the Solon Spartans, as uniformed members of the military and local firemen and law enforcement were invited by the Demons to join them on the field for the anthem. The back of the Demons’ uniforms bore the words pride, valor, respect and honor in camouflage trim.

The Lady Spartans jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, but West Delaware broke open a 7-7 tie and took control, pushing the lead to six points at 15-9, and then using an eight-point run to close it out.

Old Gold Diner to lock up the femme fatales

Annual fundraiser culminates with lock-in Sept. 28

SOLON– It’s time for the community to join together in a jailbreak.
Solon’s Old Gold Diner will conclude a month of fundraising activities Wednesday, Sept. 28, with a special meal, entertainment and a lock-in of female jailbirds who will have to raise bail money for the program before their release.
Last year’s Old Gold fundraiser featured the incarceration of five men who were willing to become “jailbirds” for a short amount of time, raising bail for their release by asking friends, family and program-supporters to make cash donations to the cause.
This year, it’s the women’s turn.

He’s passionate about beer

Bill Heinrich rides the craft beer wave

SOLON– Beer is an amber alcoholic beverage brewed by the fermentation of cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops. Beer has been around since at least the fifth millennium B.C. in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
In 2012, according to The Beer Institute, Americans consumed 6.3 billion gallons of beer in the previous year with an individual average of 28.3 gallons.
Whatever the 2016 consumption statistics are, Brian Heinrich can rest assured his Kickshaw Barrel Works ORB, a small-batch craft beer, will have contributed to them.

Maybe next year: City declines parade move

Football parents ask for return downtown

SOLON– The City of Solon reluctantly rained on hopes to relocate the Solon High School Homecoming Parade back downtown later this month.
The request, presented at a Sept. 7 city council meeting by members of the Solon Football Club, came too late to deal with the logistics of closing Main Street, Mayor Steve Stange said.
The parade, set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, was before the council as a consent agenda item, but football parents were seeking to modify the event application and revert the route to its previous path.
