Supt. Miller leaving Solon to head AEA

SOLON– It was a tough decision, but it was a big opportunity as well.
Solon Community School District (SCSD) Superintendent Sam Miller has accepted a position as chief administrator at Area Education Agency (AEA) 267 in Cedar Falls.
He will remain with the district until his current contract ends June 30.
The Solon school board held a special meeting Tuesday, April 7, to consider Miller’s resignation and the timeline for a superintendent search. The board hired Ray and Associates of Cedar Rapids to begin the process of recruiting Miller’s replacement.

District to save money on earthwork, and it’ll need it

Firmer figures put costs $3 million over $25.5 million bond amount

SOLON– They can move the dirt, but they can’t lay any pavement.
The Solon Community School District Board of Education approved an $833,000 bid from Peterson Contractors Inc. (PCI) of Reinbeck for excavation and earthwork in connection with the construction of a new middle school and a center for the performing arts addition to the high school.
But the district received no bids for the paving portion of the project, which was also scheduled to be awarded at a special meeting March 30.

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will be hosting its 4th annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 25, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year.

RAGBRAI information meetings to be held April 17 and 20

SOLON– The City of Solon will host two informational meetings for Solon businesses, local churches and non-profit organizations interested in having a vendor booth for RAGBRAI July 24 in Solon. The community is invited to attend one of these meetings to be held at city hall on Friday, April 17, at 10 a.m. or Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. City staff will review the route through Solon, Main Street business outdoor service areas and vendor booth information.

Old Gold Diner celebrates 35th

SOLON– Solon’s Old Gold Diner will celebrate its 35th anniversary Wednesday, April 15, with musical entertainment by Johnny Krob.
Other April events include
• Old Gold Diner Site Council meets April 28 at 1:30 p.m.
Reservations must be made the day before by 1 p.m. (for Monday call by 1 p.m. the Friday before)
All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $3.25 per person no matter their age.

Create your own art at April 11 Art for the Arts Spotlight FUNraiser 

SOLON– On Saturday, April 11, local artist Lianne Westcot will host and provide step-by-step guidance in her studio in Swisher for the creation of a 16x20 canvas called Springtime Symphony. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in its creation.
There will be two sessions, both on Saturday, April 11, the first at 3:30 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. No painting experience necessary.
Solon Spotlight will provide light snacks. Participants are encouraged to bring your favorite beverage– only non-alcoholic beverages at the 3:30 p.m. seating.

Sutliff Bridge Authority scholarship aims to help area students

SUTLIFF– A new scholarship aims to help six area students.
The Sutliff Bridge Authority is awarding a one-time $1,000 scholarship to a student from each of the following school districts: Lisbon, Mount Vernon, North Cedar, Solon, West Branch and Tipton.
Applicants are required to be accepted to a two- or four-year college, university or construction trade school and to be studying environmental science, history, agriculture, structural/civil engineering or architecture. An essay on “why historic preservation is important” is part of the application process.

SHS Drama Department to present “12 Angry Jurors” April 17-19

SOLON– The Solon Drama Department is proud to present “12 Angry Jurors” as its 2015 spring play. The show, renamed from the 1957 film “12 Angry Men,” is an American classic that explores our justice system, prejudice and the power of the individual. The show takes place over the course of one evening in the jury room as 12 jurors deliberate on their verdict. Tempers flare and each juror’s morality is tested. Did the 19-year old boy kill his father or is there room for reasonable doubt?

Solon names Lisa Bishop head girls basketball coach

SOLON– The Solon Community School District announced the hiring of Lisa Bishop as Head Girls Basketball Coach (pending School Board approval).
Solon Activities Director, Keith McSweeney, stated, “We’re very excited about having Coach Bishop lead our girls basketball program. We believe our girls are going to love Lisa’s positive energy and passion. She brings a wealth of playing experience and knowledge to our program. But I’m most excited about her serving as a tremendous role model for our student-athletes.”

CEDAR RAPIDS– Balance through the lineup and three key event champions kept the Spartans close in the 2015 J-Hawk Relays April 4 at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Solon’s fourth place finish followed a runaway team title at Tipton earlier in the week.
Wins from Emma Moss in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.24), Josie Durr in the high jump (5’2), Shelby Gunnells in the shot put (44’5) and points in eight other events kept Solon’s Class 3A girls in the mix throughout the meet, which featured larger, mostly 4A schools.

Is the Highway 1 pedestrian crossing being used by young children?

Resident expresses concern to city council

SOLON– The City of Solon is urging local parents to educate their children on the use of the Highway 1 pedestrian crossing.
During the Citizen Speak portion of a March 18 meeting, Solon resident Pam Landgrebe expressed concern to city council members about the number of young children who disregard the pedestrian traffic signal on Highway 1 between Short and First streets.
Landgrebe, a resident of the Windmill Estates subdivision, said she frequently walks in the neighborhood where the pedestrian stoplight is located.
