Council says no to 16k for courthouse

Hearing set to consider borrowing for $727,000 fire station addition

SOLON– The Solon City Council did not support language in a ballot initiative that would dedicate 10 percent of potential Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) revenue toward payment of a bond for the county courthouse annex.
Council members did schedule a public hearing on securing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for an addition to the fire station.
The city has a number of major infrastructure projects still on its to-do list, including the North Trunk sewer line, a water tower, and other municipal projects, and is currently carrying substantial debt to retire.

Volleyball camp registrations available

SOLON– Solon Youth Volleyball Camps are approaching. Registration forms are available online in the Virtual Backpack and can be turned in at camp with payment, but please email Coach Gustin with the player’s name, grade, and T-shirt size (youth or adult) at pgustin@solon.k12.ia.us, as soon as possible.
Grades three, four and five camp: Aug. 4 and 5, 10 a.m. until noon.
Grades six, seven and eight camp: Aug. 4-5, 12:30 until 2:30 p.m.

School board selects construction manager

Ames company approved pending bond issue passage

SOLON– Story Construction of Ames has been selected to provide Construction Management services for the Solon school district, if a September bond issue passes.
At a July 14 meeting, members of the Solon school board voted 4-1 to approve Story Construction at an estimated cost of between $1.29 million and $1.5 million. Tim Brown cast the dissenting vote.
Story Construction and Larson Construction Co. Inc. of Independence made presentations to the school board at its June 2 meeting, with discussion following on June 26.

Meal and a Movie moved to Aug. 1

SOLON– Senior Advocates are moving the July Meal and a Movie to Friday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at the library. A movie set in Cornwall by Sea starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith as two sisters who nurse a gifted young Polish violinist back to health after being swept overboard. The young man’s presence tends to disrupt the peaceful lives of the sisters and their community. Mercy Iowa City to present free bariatric seminar

IOWA CITY– Dr. Shireesh Saurabh will offer a free seminar to potential bariatric surgery patients on Thursday, July 24, from 6 until 7 p.m. in the first floor conference room at Mercy Iowa City.
Bariatric surgery is surgery on the stomach and/or intestines to help a person with extreme obesity lose weight. Bariatric surgery is an option for people who have a body mass index (BMI) above 40. It is also an option for people with a body mass index between 35 and 40 who have health problems like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or sleep apnea.

NORTH LIBERTY– Colony Country RV Park has closed its gates for good, and even though the campground was in operation for 25 years, becoming a part of many family traditions and lifelong friendships, the Colony family does not really view it as the end of an era.

Register now for North Liberty Aquatic Center youth triathlon

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Aquatic Center will present the third annual North Liberty Youth Triathlon, Just Tri, on Aug. 3. Hosted with Tri-Fit Agape, LLC, the event features swimming, biking and running in three distances for kids ages 6 through 14.
The races start at the North Liberty Community Center, with check in beginning at 7 a.m. Races begin at 8 a.m. A health and fitness expo will follow the race.
• Ages 6, 7 and 8 will swim 25 meters, bike 0.9 miles, and run a quarter mile.
• Ages 9 trough 11 will swim 50 meters, bike 2.4 miles, and run one mile.

North Liberty Pickleball mixer grows each year

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s a unique group of people who are delighted to find themselves in a pickle.
Local Pickleball aficionados hosted their fifth annual North Liberty Pickleball summer gathering at the Penn Meadows Park tennis courts, a sort of invitational tournament that is more fun than competition, and includes a potluck picnic and social time. Games are played round robin-style so players mix with others from all over the state.

New Penn Landing farmer’s market to begin Sunday, Aug. 3, in NL

NORTH LIBERTY–Penn Landing and Grand Rail Development, at the corner of Highway 965 and Penn Street, will host the new Penn Landing Market, a farmers’ market, starting Sunday, Aug. 3, from noon until 3 p.m. near Yotopia Frozen Yogurt. The market will run every other Sunday through October and will feature food vendors, family fun and live music.

City of Tiffin releases audit report

DES MOINES– Auditor of State Mary Mosiman released an audit report on the City of Tiffin.
The city’s receipts totaled $9,147,878 for the year ended June 30, 2013. The receipts included $789,586 in property tax, $744,133 from tax increment financing, $188,470 from local option sales tax, $938,713 from charges for service, $194,851 from operating grants, contributions and restricted interest, $52,900 from capital grants, contributions and restricted interest, $46,232 from unrestricted interest on investments, $6,019,792 of bond proceeds and $173,201 from other general receipts.

Still time to donate to local pantrys’ Thanksgiving in July

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Food and Clothing Pantry is participating in Thanksgiving in July food drive activities. All food and funds donated will remain in North Liberty. Please drop-off food and/or financial donations at your local financial institution during the month of July. Financial donations are counted four pounds per dollar. The financial institution that collects the most pounds wins the Traveling Turkey Trophy to display throughout the next year.
