Community

Referendum likely, but jail won’t be on it

IOWA CITY– The dilemma over the Johnson County Jail and Courthouse had the board of supervisors in meetings that at times were contentious late last year. After another failed bond issue last May, which would have built a justice center, combining additional courthouse space with a new jail, the supervisors have continued to battle over a variety of options.

Parents still don’t understand SBG

Report shows interpreting grades on PowerSchool continues to stymie

SOLON– Parents just don’t understand.
A year didn’t do a lot to improve the comprehension of standards-based grading (SBG) for parents in the Solon Community School District (SCSD).
An SBG report presented at the April 14 meeting of the Solon school board showed that parents participating in a spring survey have not significantly improved their understanding of what their student is learning.
“We definitely need to do a better job helping them understand PowerSchool,” Director of Instruction and Technology Matt Townsley told board members. “That continues to be a concern.”

Council members also approved a seasonal, part-time landscaping position for the city as they moved through a packed agenda.

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty has been given the green light to expand its boundaries.
The state’s City Development Board voted unanimously to approve North Liberty’s application to annex a total of 567.7 acres on the city’s current southeast side.
The city received voluntary annexation petitions from property owners last fall, and North Liberty officials were poised to grant them, due to the anticipated new Iowa City school district high school to be built in that area.

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s the same hot party with the same cool vibe.
It’s just happening a little later this year.
The North Liberty Blues & BBQ festival planners held a press conference last week to announce the event’s lineup and activities, with its biggest changes being the move away from its traditional Memorial Day weekend date, and a brand new location.
This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, from noon until 10 p.m., and will be held in Centennial Park near the corner of Jones Boulevard and St. Andrews Drive in North Liberty.
