Solon Advocates select Brannaman and Bark as Seniors of the Year

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates’ recipients of the 2014 Senior of the Year award are Rita Brannaman and Fred Bark. Both Rita and Fred have given their time, energy and resources to the betterment of the community and are well deserving of this yearly award.
Senior of the Year was first awarded in 2006 to Jack Neuzil. In the following years, recipients included Wayne Croy, Milt Hunt, Pat Ikan, Marie Kroul, Elaine Reynolds and Bev Noska, Anna McAtee and Jean and Bob Stinocher.

All-star/alumni game June 8 to raise funds for basketball program

SOLON– The Solon high school boys’ basketball program with hold an all-star/alumni game fundraising event on June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Solon High School gymnasium. Requested donation is $5. All proceeds will go toward the boys’ basketball program.

Solon Public Library

New computers

We are in the process of updating our public computers. It is currently a work in progress, but over time, we will have all new computers with updated software and faster speed for patrons use.

Storytime

Storytime is a library program that takes place every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 2 through 5. Each themed session includes stories, songs, and rhymes followed by a craft. Younger siblings are always welcome to attend. The themes for the rest of May include “Going on an Adventure,” “Bugs,” and “Ways to Travel.”

DNR to hold Solon water quality monitoring workshop June 7

IOWA CITY– IOWATER, Iowa’s statewide volunteer water quality monitoring program, will host an introductory IOWATER Workshop on June 7 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church. During the one-day workshop classroom instruction will be combined with hands-on training as participants learn how to monitor and assess the quality of their local streams, rivers and lakes.
IOWATER emphasizes a perspective based on the watershed, or the area of land that drains into a body of water, and what citizens can do to protect and improve local water bodies.

SOLON– Congratulations to the Solon Middle School show choirs on a successful competition season.

Solon basketball camps offered in June and July

SOLON– Camp Director and head boys basketball coach Jason S. Pershing will be offering three different camp opportunities for the Solon community as well as surrounding communities. The basketball camps will foster a fundamental approach, with a lot of skill development. Each camp will have a guest camp instructor that has competed athletically at the collegiate level as well as professional level. Each camp will be capped at 42 participants, to ensure maximum interaction, individualized attention and instruction.
