Solon American Legion Auxiliary and SAL Turkey dinner Nov. 15

SOLON– Solon American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion are sponsoring a turkey dinner on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Solon American Legion. The menu includes roast turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, sauerkraut, rye bread, cranberries, lemonade coffee, milk and dessert. The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for kids 6-12.

Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 can drive Saturday, Nov. 14

SOLON– Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 will be holding a can drive Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. until noon at 603 Viking Dr. in Solon to raise money for troop supplies.

Solon’s Kevin Samek inducted into Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame

SOLON­– Amped and energetic, uninhibited and intense, young rock musicians often have dreams of making it from their parents’ garages all the way to the big time.
Most don’t make it out of the garage.
Fate played a different tune for Kevin Samek of Solon.
In the 1970s, Kevin joined the rock band Windfall Jac, lending his vocal stylings to the band covering artists like Led Zepplin, ZZ Top and Eric Clapton.

Girl Scouts donate Buddy Benches for Lakeview

SOLON– Fifth grade Girl Scout Troop 5122 built and painted two Buddy Benches for Lakeview Elementary. A Buddy Bench is a bench that is colorful. When a child who needs a friend sits down on it, students see the person on the Buddy Bench and ask them to come play. The Girl Scouts made a video skit to show future Lakeview students how the Buddy Bench works. The girls thank Sherwin-Williams for donating the paint and other supplies, and their parents for helping with the project. The Buddy Benches were the girls’ project to earn their Bronze Award, the highest award Junior Girl Scouts can earn.

Solon Optimist Club to sponsor Oratorical Contest for students under age 18

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon is encouraging area students to speak their minds about the topic, “How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others,” as part of the Optimist International Oratorical Contest for the 2015-16 year.

Former NFL player and bestselling author visits Solon Middle School with a message about the importance of reading

SOLON– Former NFL player and current young adult novelist Tim Green sometimes speaks in CAPITAL letters.
Green, a former defensive end for the Atlanta Falcons from 1986 to 1993, used his interest in sports and reading to weave together a message about the importance of books and hard work for a packed audience of students and teachers in the Solon Middle School gymnasium Oct. 28.
The dynamic speaker and author stressed to his audience the importance of books as a gateway to other worlds and experiences, and as the training room for their minds.

Class sizes still rising at Garner Elementary

ICCSD may allow families at crowded schools to transfer to schools with smaller class sizes

IOWA CITY – As K-3 enrollment continues to creep upward in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), the Board of Directors will consider options to keep class sizes down, such as allowing students to transfer to schools with small classes.

NL council approves arts funding for kids

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s new budget strategy to fund mid-year requests from nonprofit organizations has already benefitted local seniors.
Now it is helping area youth as well.
The North Liberty City Council in October approved two social service funding applications from Elder Services, in the amount of $1,120, and North Liberty Senior Dining program, for $1,500. A third application from Any Given Child of Iowa City, in the amount of $2,000 each year for three years, was considered at the council’s Oct. 27 meeting.

Local author releases new crime novel

Reading at Prairie Lights Nov. 19

IOWA CITY– Acclaimed and long time Iowa City author Patrick Irelan will read at Prairie Lights Bookstore Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.
Irelan’s new crime fiction novel, “The Big Drugstore,” is set in the Quad Cities alongside the Mississippi River. The novel introduces smart-talking, big-hearted, quick-witted and down-on-his-luck Private Detective Mike Scofield.
The book gets five stars from Foreword Reviews.

Haunted happenings

NORTH LIBERTY– With a turnout of more than 720 kids, North Liberty’s Haunted Happenings event is easily one of the most popular Halloween activities in the Corridor.
This year’s Haunted Happenings took place Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, at the North Liberty Community Center.
