Solar energy dashboard now online

NORTH LIBERTY– Last year, the city began seeking proposals to replace at least 60 percent– and ideally 80 percent or more– of the power needs for certain public facilities, and this past fall, began using solar power for the parks, streets and fire department facilities.
In less than four months, these three new arrays have powered the equivalent of 58,613.15 light bulbs for a day and saved 13,597.66 kg of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of planting more than 750 trees.

South Slope rallies for Camp Courageous, encourages other companies to join

NORTH LIBERTY– Employees at South Slope Cooperative Communications, headquartered in North Liberty, are coming together to raise funds for Camp Courageous and now extending the challenge to other organizations in the Corridor.
The cause is personal for an employee of South Slope whose son has benefited greatly from his time spent at Camp Courageous. When news spread at South Slope about Camp Courageous’ fundraising needs, employees rallied to help.

Such feedback from patrons of the North Liberty Community Library is exactly what Director Jennie Garner and her staff like to hear in response to the innovative programming and resources they have been developing for young families and children.
“That’s exciting to us because it means word is getting out on what we’re doing here,” said Garner.

Register for NLYBS through March 3

NORTH LIBERTY– Registration for the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball’s (NLYBS) 25th anniversary season is open. Sign up your child or children at www.eteamz.com/NLYBS by March 3.
Leagues are available for boys and girls age 4 through eighth grade. Call the NLYBS hotline at 319-248-1283 with questions or check the FAQ page on the NLYBS website. Scholarships are available.
New this year is First Grade Baseball, and Third Grade Rookie players will have the opportunity to pitch. Umpires will also be needed, but must be at least 14 years old. Training is provided.

Jury duty scam making rounds

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has taken reports from the public that they have received calls and or messages from a person identifying themselves as a deputy at the sheriff’s office. The recipient is informed that they have missed jury duty or they have a warrant out for their arrest. They are given the option of either paying a bond/fine or turning themselves in to the jail.

$6 million gift for SCSD

School board, Gerdin Family Foundation announce contribution to build high school addition

SOLON– It is a massive contribution.
An estimated $6 million addition to Solon High School will be built by the Gerdin Family Foundation.
The addition, which includes a practice gymnasium, expanded weight room and the completion of the elevated walking track eliminated from the original construction, was announced at a special meeting of the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education Monday, Feb. 13, in the lobby of the recently-completed Solon Center for the Arts.

Solon Methodist men hosting annual soup supper Friday, Feb. 24

SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Men will be hosting their annual soup supper Friday, Feb. 24, from 5-7 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $4 for kids under the age of 12, and includes oyster stew, chili, and chicken noodle soup, hot dogs and dessert.
Live entertainment will be provided by Leo Shima. Donations of new or used children’s books will be collected for the “Change a Child” campaign.

Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper March 31

SHUEYVILLE– The Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper is Friday, March 31, from 5-7 p.m.
Come enjoy good food and fellowship with friends.
The pancake supper is an all-you-can eat supper which includes pancakes, eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns and beverage. The supper is used to support mission activities, both at home and around the world.
The church mailing address is 1195 Steeple Ln. NE, in Swisher, but is located in Shueyville, just 3/4 mile east of Interstate 380 on Exit 10.
Cost for adults is $6, ages 3-12 is $3, and those under 3 are free.

New city administrator finds paradise and potential in Ely

ELY– The City of Ely has a new city administrator in Denise Hoy, a veteran of more than 29 years of small town government. Hoy started her job in Ely Jan. 3, after falling in love with the southeast Linn County community and its main street.
With three grown children out in their careers, Hoy said she felt maybe a time for change was afoot.

Allen Shima, son of Kevin and Sherri Shima, was honored on his ninth birthday on Tuesday evening, Jan. 17, with dinner at the Huhot Mongolian Grill in Coralville. Those attending were his grandparents, Leo and Elaine Shima, of Solon; Jerry and Lou Adair, of Oxford; and Nathan, Missy , Logan and Leigha Pacha, of Oxford.

Kevin and Sherri Shima entertained with a party in honor of their son, Allen, for his ninth birthday on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21, at the United Methodist Church Family Life Center. About 25 classmates, friends and relatives attended.

The Ely Town and Country Club met at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, at Gwen’s Restaurant, in Lisbon, for dinner and a meeting. There were 28 members and two guests present. The event was postponed for a week due to the ice on Jan. 16. Hostess was Bonnie Fencl. Guest speaker was Ed St. John, of Solon, a beekeeper. He gave a interesting talk about the bees.

NORTH LIBERTY– Wind chills in the teens didn’t stop thousands from enjoying another year of North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter the weekend of Feb. 3 at Penn Meadows Park.
“It’s nice to have something to do in the winter,” said Sarah Espy, of North Liberty.
She and her husband Matt Espy, along with their two children, agreed the cold temperatures were worth the festivities.
“It could be a lot worse,” said Matt.
