Motongator Joe headlines Sutliff Authority Labor Day fund raiser

SUTLIFF– Michigan resident and Nashville recording artist Motongator Joe will be appearing in Sutliff from 1 until 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, to headline the Sutliff Bridge Authority’s annual Labor Day weekend fundraiser.
The events support the preservation of the historic Sutliff Bridge.

New audio books

“City of Bones” by Michael Connelly. When the bones of a 12-year-old boy are found scattered in the Hollywood Hills, Harry Bosch is drawn into a case that brings up the darkest memories from his own haunted past. The bones have been buried for years, but the cold case doesn’t deter Bosch. Solon Public Library Board of Trustees has rural vacancy

JOHNSON COUNTY– The Board of Supervisors is accepting applications for one vacancy on the Solon Public Library Board of Trustees for a person residing in unincorporated Johnson County. The vacancy is for an unexpired term, beginning immediately and expiring Dec. 31, 2015. While all Solon Public Library Board of Trustees members are appointed by the Solon mayor, the appointment of a resident of unincorporated Johnson County is subject to the approval of the Board of Supervisors.

Marching Spartans have a competition on Sept. 27

SOLON– The Solon Marching Spartans will compete at the Linn Mar High School Marching Invitational. Performance time will be announced later and will be posted on Mr. Cervantez section of the school web page when it becomes available. Also parents not on his mailing list should send Mr. Cervantez an email and ask to be added to his list serve. His email address link is also on the web page.

Swisher Fun Days 2014

Community event celebrates supporting local veterans

SWISHER– With kids’ games and a vendor fair, a horseshoe tournament and cow chip bingo, and especially a weekend full of free live music, Swisher Fun Days truly is a fun way to support veterans.
The 2014 Swisher Fun Days weekend was held Aug. 1 and 2 in the small town of 879 people. It’s been a community tradition for so long, even organizers have a hard time pinning down the number of years the free event has taken place.
“I do know it has been at least 28 years,” said parade organizer Gary Palas.

North Liberty’s free summer lunch program a stirring success

NORTH LIBERTY– It started with a question posed by one small group:
When families, strapped for grocery money, rely on public schools’ free and reduced meal programs to help sustain nutrition throughout the school year, what happens in the summer months when kids are on their own?
It was answered by an entire community and a volunteer force of over 150 people.

Progress continues on CCA school projects

OXFORD — Ray Willoughby started his building projects report to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board with a little bit of good news.
“Ben (Macumber, principal of Amana Elementary) got his air turned on fully tonight,” Willoughby said, referring to the completion of a $453,000 renovation project at the school. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) work, along with electrical upgrades throughout the building, are two of several projects funded by a $48 million bond issue approved by voters in February for renovation and expansion.

Tiffin council considers tax rebate request for seed dealer

Big incentive for Big Country

TIFFIN– At odds over a tax rebate request, Tiffin City Council members nonetheless directed city administration to proceed with the paperwork to financially assist a local business with a planned expansion.
Big Country Seeds owner Dan Steines returned to the council Aug. 13 to ask for another five-year, 100 percent property tax rebate for a second expansion of his business. Tiffin council approved Big Country’s first expansion in 2013, for which Steines’ received a five-year, 100 percent tax rebate; the first the city has granted for longer than three years.

CCA Foundation seeks 2014 Hall of Fame nominations

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana Foundation Board is seeking nominations for the 2014 Hall of Fame award. Application letters are due by Sept. 1 and should include at the minimum the following information: a) Name of nominee, b) Address of nominee, c) Year (if known) and school graduated from, d) Whether person is deceased, e) Why should this person be considered for this honor– provide as many details as possible (years of service, what was the service, offices held, etc.), f) Letter signed by nominator with address and phone number if questions.

Youth baseball and softball fun fall league to begin Sept. 8

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) is providing a fun, relaxed baseball/softball experience for kids ages six through 10. The season consists of five sessions on Monday nights from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 8. The season will end on Oct. 6, or Oct. 13 if there is a rain-out during the season. North Liberty’s annual Fun Run/Walk to be held Sept. 21

IOWA CITY– The North Liberty Steering Committee of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce announces the annual North Liberty Fun Run/Walk on Sunday, Sept. 21, beginning at North Bend Elementary. Sponsored by MidWestOne Bank, the event features a 5K route and free kids’ race for children ages 12 and under.

Invasive species eradication day Sept. 6

Join Iowa’s five land trusts to celebrate land protection in Iowa. Come for the volunteer day; stay for live music and lunch.
The Nature Conservancy, Bur Oak Land Trust (formerly known as Johnson County Heritage Trust), Whiterock Conservancy, Four Mounds Foundation and INHF will host a volunteer day to eradicate invasive species and take back the land with complementary lunch and live music to follow.
