Robert C. Davis

Robert C. Davis, age 81, of Williamsburg, formerly of Marengo, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass was held Monday, May 20, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, with military honors. A memorial fund has been established.

Steven Downey

Steven J. Downey, 64, of Marion, died of cancer on Monday, May 13, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Graveside services with military rites were held May 17 at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy; two daughters, Julie Downey of North Liberty and Valerie (Dan) Morey of Mundelein, Ill.; a stepsister, Becky Hautzinger of Nebraska; and three stepbrothers, Steve Downey of California, Doug Downey of Texas and Jeff Downey of Colorado.
He is also survived by two grandchildren, Caitlin and Meghan.

Julia Hromidko

Julia Hromidko, 84, passed peacefully following a short illness Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Celebration of Life was held May 17 at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial was in Blain Cemetery near Swisher.
She was born in Ely on May 3, 1929, to Frank and Lottie (Bednashek) Hartl. She married Charles Hromidko on Sept. 23, 1946, in Cedar Rapids. Julia and Charles began raising their family near Ely and built their later life near Swisher, where they farmed until retirement.

Jeanette Marie Pentico

Jeanette Marie (Jordan) Pentico, 65, of Marion, died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Marion, by Rev. Gregory Williamson. Burial was at Troy Mills Cemetery, rural Troy Mills.

Bernice Werner

Bernice Matilda Elizabeth (Burmeister) Werner went to be with her lord on Thursday, May 9, 2013. Services were held May 16 at the Solon United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery.
Bernice was born to John and Clara Burmeister on Sept. 23, 1922, in Lowden. The family moved to Clarence, where she attended a country school. Bernice helped on the farm and with her younger siblings.
Bernice moved to Iowa City where she married Robert “Roy” Werner on Dec. 19, 1945. She worked as a homemaker, enjoying gardening, canning, cooking, sewing and especially making pie.

Robert Keating

Robert P. “Bob” Keating, 85, former chief of the Iowa City Fire Department, died peacefully at his home Friday, April 26, 2013, surrounded by his family under the compassionate care of Iowa City Hospice.
Funeral services were held April 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to support a number of causes important to Bob and his family. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web at www.gayandciha.com.
