Obituaries

Sandy Powell

Sandy Powell, 73, of rural North Liberty died at her home Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013.
Memorial services will be held Aug. 14 at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty.

Deborah Steva

Deborah Jean Steva, 66, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a four-year battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at the United Church of Monticello, with interment at Monona Cemetery, Monona. The Rev. Edwin Moreano officiated at the services.

John Haddy

John M. Haddy, 54, of Cedar Rapids, died of cancer Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services were held July 30 and 31 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Father Fred Shaheen officiated. Burial was in St. George Cemetery.
John was born April 30, 1959, in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Washington High School and later received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from University of Northern Iowa. He taught at Kirkwood Community College for more than 20 years.

Helmut ‘Hal’ Knolmayer

Helmut “Hal” Knolmayer, 67, of Granger, passed from this life on Thursday, July 18, 2013. A prayer service was held on July 22 at Iles Funeral Homes in Madrid.
Hal was born on May 28, 1946 in Dornbirn, Austria, to Edmund and Anna (Farkas) Knolmayer. He was a 1966 graduate of Woodward-Granger High School, where he shined as a football player. Hal was employed as a detail painter with Massey Ferguson in Des Moines, until they closed. He then worked in construction. May he rest in peace.

Dorothy Strong

Dorothy (Gorman) Strong, 87, of O’Fallon, Ill., died July 29, 2013, at Mercy Hospice Center Iowa City.
Local survivors are nieces and nephew: Charlene (Al) Rozinek of West Branch; Phyllis (Steve) Black and Mike (Cathy) Fountain of Iowa City; Joyce Fountain of Tiffin; and Barb Fountain of Mt. Pleasant.
Preceeded in death by her husband Ed, parents, two brothers, sister Ethtyle Fountain, nephews Tom and Pat Fountain, nieces Marlene Teymer and Glennys O’Brien.

Jack Brazier

Jack S. Brazier “Silver Fox,” 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, at O’Malley’s Pub.
Jack S. Brazier was born April 29, 1932, to Leo and Adeline Killen Brazier in Eau Claire, Wis. He attended Pillsbury Military Academy in Owatonna, Minn., Roosevelt High School and MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis. Jack worked for Iowa Manufacturing from 1954 until 1995. He was united in marriage to Arlene Frana on Dec. 22, 1963.
