Clipper boys 4th at WaMaC Conference Meet

Sedlacek, Barker and McCarty set the pace for CCA x-country

North Liberty Leader
SOLON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country squad placed fourth in the WaMaC Conference Meet Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area in Solon. Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the meet with 35 points, followed by Western Dubuque (71), Marion (82) and CCA (122).
Wyatt Sedlacek led the Creek Boys with a 17th-place finish in 17:13 with Nick O’Connor and Cole Liebe right behind him in 18th and 19th place, respectively.

Hawkeyes survive

Iowa beats Minnesota, 14-7

I think I’ve talked about how hard it is for me to write about the Hawkeyes when they lose, especially football. If Iowa loses a football game, I have to wait a whole week for the next one.
During basketball and wrestling seasons, there might be a wrestling meet or basketball game the very next night after a loss.
When Iowa lost to North Dakota State it was tough, but losing to Northwestern was tougher.
All week I had to hear, “What’s wrong with Iowa?”

Spartans continue to ride the crazy train

Solon moves to 6-1 on season with 26-0 win

SOLON– It is heard at almost every football game. It inspires football fans and teams alike, but has somehow become a theme song for this season’s Spartan Football express.
“All aboard! Hahaha…
I, I, I, I… [fade]
Crazy, but that’s how it goes…
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train…”
- “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Ozbourne.
Following last year’s 6-5 record and redistricting, this season the Solon Spartans have definitely boarded a crazy train.

Lady Spartans race into postseason

Cross country girls second at North Linn, champs at IMS

TROY MILLS– Heading into conference and postseason cross country meets, Solon’s girls are ‘packing it in’... in a good way. All five scoring runners were within 27 seconds of each other at the finish line as the Lady Spartans captured runner-up honors in the 19-team North Linn Invitational, Oct. 8.
That builds momentum as the starter’s pistol cracks Thursday, at home for the WaMaC Conference Meet at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area, and a week later, again on their home course, for the state qualifying meet.

Crowds build as cross country season hits final stretch

Spartans 20th overall at North Linn, fourth at IMS

TROY MILLS– Expect a crowd at North Linn every year.
The October cross country meet features hundreds of runners– 25 schools provide entries on the boys side, with 22 represented in the girls competition. And there are just as many fans packed around the course, threading around and through the rural Troy Mills athletic fields, school buildings and woods.
“The crowd is crazy; people yelling. There is some pushing as the pack tries to get sorted out; to try to stay ahead of somebody,” recalled Solon sophomore Jorel Justus of his first trip around the course.

Lady Spartans sweep Central DeWitt

Solon’s Paige Gallagher (9) and Abby Smith (12) battle at the net with a Central DeWitt player during the Lady Spartans’ 3-0 sweep of the Sabers Oct. 6 on Senior Night. Solon won, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-20 to collect the first home victory of the season. (photo by Doug Lindner)

North Liberty youth fall ball expands on summer’s success

NORTH LIBERTY– Some kids don’t know when to quit. For the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball league, that’s a good thing.
A 900-plus player operation in the summer, the league has been seeing more turnover into the fall season, when a five-week clinic is offered through the Diamond Dreams Sports Academy.
“Obviously the partnership is working because kids are coming back, for one, and new kids are signing up,” said Diamond Dreams’ general manager Kyle Sherman.
After a 998-player and 83-team summer season, NLYBS had 140 kindergarteners through eighth graders sign up for fall ball.

Trojans take down the big cats

Iowa City West gets 24-10 road win at Cedar Rapids Kennedy

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High Trojans picked up a decisive 24-10 win over the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars Friday, Oct. 7, at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
The Trojans built a 17-0 lead in the first half on a 9-yard touchdown reception by Devontae Lane, a 29-yard field goal by Lucas Karwal and a 5-yard pass to Oliver Martin in the final seconds of the half.
Kennedy regrouped and threatened in the second half.

Women of Troy shut out Trojans

IC West sweeps Waterloo East, 3-0

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy swept the Waterloo East High School Trojans Tuesday, Oct. 4, at West High. Clippers’ streak ends in Indian territory

Marion edges Clear Creek Amana, 15-14

North Liberty Leader
MARION– Throughout this season, Clear Creek Amana (CCA) co-coach Matt Hughes has said, “Sometimes the ball bounces your way, sometimes it doesn’t.” He has also said, “We had Lady Luck on our side tonight.” After a record six wins and no losses, the Clippers sailed into Marion to face the Indians Friday, Oct. 7.
The ball bounced the wrong way and Lady Luck was nowhere to be found as the Indians upset the unbeaten Clippers, 15-14, in overtime.

Creek Girls 3-2 at home v-ball invitational

The Creek Girls swept Mid-Prairie 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) with seven kills from Lauren Helle, five apiece from Shauntina Williams and McKenzie Justice, 17 assists from Cheyanne Bunch and 13 assists from Sheyanne Koethe.
