Hawkeye State

Hawk Talk

I thought about this story even before the game started.
Hawkeye nation was reeling from losing two of the best football and basketball players in program history.
Iowa lost Tyler Sash and Roy Marble last week, and even though the Hawks beats the ‘Clones last Saturday, 31-17, it still was a tough week for Hawkeye fans.
The only game I ever went to in Ames was in 2009.
Iowa trailed 3-0 before exploding for 35 straight points and cruising to a 35-3 win.

Xavier pulls off fourth quarter comeback

Interception halts Solon drive in final seconds, 22-19

SOLON– After hopefully exorcizing their demons with the 35-14 win over Mount Vernon, Solon looked poised to put it together when they battled Xavier on Sept. 11.
But it was not to be.
Cedar Rapids Xavier mounted a 93-yard fourth-quarter drive to drop Solon’s Spartans to 1-2 on the season with a 21-19 win Friday at Spartan Stadium.

Trisha Coberly third at Benton Community invitational

Cross country times drop

ATKINS– With a couple more new faces, Solon’s girls locked in fifth place Saturday at the Benton Community Invitational cross country meet.
Senior Trish Coberly was third overall during the annual Run Through the Woods, in Atkins. That’s the top individual finish for the Spartans this season. Freshman Erin Kerkhoff was within a few seconds all the way, taking 12th and collecting her first varsity (top-15) medal. Solon’s boys matched the fifth-place team finish. Senior Simon Düster was 16th overall. Senior Joe Regan was 18th.

West wins annual battle against City High, 3-2

We like the spike!

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– They took back The Spike.
West High’s Women of Troy took possession of the traveling trophy, consisting of a golden railroad spike mounted on a plaque, after defeating rival City High, 3-2, in varsity volleyball Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the West High gymnasium. The City High Little Hawks won the coveted trophy last year, by the same margin, in their gym.
City was ranked No. 1 in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union while the Women of Troy were 10th.

Warriors’ offense too much for Trojans

West falls to CR Wash, 42-13

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans fell to 0-3 on the season with a 42-13 loss to Cedar Rapids Washington, in a non-district meeting of the Mississippi Valley Conference rivals, Friday, Sept. 11, on the Trojans’ turf.
A scoreless first quarter gave way to three Washington touchdowns before halftime.
With 9:31 left in the first half, the Warriors scored on a short run. Wash scored again with 59 seconds remaining on a touchdown pass and ended the half with another pass into the West High end zone in the final five seconds and took a 21-0 lead into the locker room.

Clippers football falls to 0-3 with 28-7 loss to Washington

North Liberty Leader
WASHINGTON– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers sank to an 0-3 record in the 2015 varsity football season as they opened district play with a 28-7 loss on the road to the Washington Demons Friday, Sept. 11.
Washington’s Ryan Reighard challenged the Clipper defense running for 206 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Aaron Akers ran for 126 yards to lead the CCA offensive effort. Evan Downes, sporting his Clipper-blue Mohawk, returned a Demon punt 17 yards for a touchdown to prevent the shutout.

Clipper boys win Tipton Invitational

Hinricks wins JV race, Douglass takes third in varsity cross country

North Liberty Leader
TIPTON– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys cross country coach Ben Robison called his team’s performance in the Tipton Invitational “one of, if not the best, top-to-bottom meets I’ve ever seen.”
The Clipper boys won the meet, besting a field of 18 teams plus four incomplete teams.
Eric Douglass took third place in the varsity race with a time of 17:35, with teammate Jacob Tener not far behind in seventh place.

West boys second, girls fourth at CR Invitational

Greiner leads boys, Gabby Skopec sets the pace for the ladies

North Liberty Leader
CEDAR RAPIDS– West High’s cross country squads competed in the 2015 Cedar Rapids Invitational hosted by Cedar Rapids Jefferson Thursday, Sept. 10, at Noelridge Park.

Women of Troy soak Little Hawks in swimming

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy took on rival City High in a swimming dual meet Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center.
West High swept the Little Hawks in both junior varsity (JV) and varsity competition. The JV squad splashed City High, 105-32, while the varsity won, 116-69.
West High swimmers won all but four events: the JV 50-yard freestyle, JV 100-yard backstroke, varsity 1-meter diving and the varsity 100-yard breaststroke.

Hawks beat heat, Redbirds

Hawk Talk

I don’t know about you, but I thought outside of the heat, that the Hawkeyes’ 31-14 opening victory over Illinois State was as good an opening game as Iowa has had in five years.
In 2011, Iowa beat Tennessee Tech, 34-7.
The Hawks opened the 2012 season with a 18-17 escape win over UNI.
2013 saw Iowa lose to Northern Illinois, 30-27, and last year the Hawks held off UNI again, 31-23.
As for the heat, I have been going to Iowa games since 1970 and that was the hottest game I’ve ever been to.

Lady Spartans split season opener

SOLON– It was an evening of rivalries as the Solon Lady Spartans hosted the Clippers of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and the Mount Vernon Mustangs, for a triangular set of volleyball matches Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The Lady Spartans split the meet, falling to CCA but defeating Mount Vernon.

Spartans rebound with win

Four TDs for Halston Durr in 35-14 win over Mount Vernon

SOLON– As the Spartans shook hands following their 21-13 loss with the Regina, a fog enveloped them like the smoke from a battle.
The stage would be different as the Spartans (0-1) met the Mount Vernon Mustangs (1-0) at Spartan Stadium on Sept. 4.
The Mustangs came to the game after putting up 285 yards of rushing and 82 yards receiving to defeat Marion, 37-14, last Friday.
