On the road again

Hawk Talk

The Iowa women had two road trips last week, winning a shootout at Northwestern, 102-99, and losing 93-88 at Maryland.
The Northwestern game could have been a big letdown after the Hawkeyes knocked off Nebraska in overtime last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Maryland, the leader in the Big Ten, was coming up Sunday and Iowa couldn’t afford to overlook the ‘Cats.
The Hawks had beaten the Wildcats at home on Jan. 14, 83-70.
Iowa led only 41-38 at half and pulled the victory out with Bethany Doolittle leading the way with 26 points.

Hawk wrestlers still unbeaten

When Iowa takes on Minnesota in anything, it’s usually a big deal.
When the Hawks are ranked No. 1 and the Gophers No. 2, it’s even bigger.
Nick Moore, former West High Trojan, set the tone for the Hawkeye wrestlers with a pin in the second period as the meet started at 165 pounds.
Iowa won six matches, Minnesota four and the Hawks came out on top of the conference dual meet, 23-12.
I’ve always liked to watch Mike Evans (174).

Badgers sweep Hawks

Wisconsin is rated fifth in the nation for a reason.
They have good shooters, they make their free throws, they don’t turn the ball over and they play defense.
Last Saturday at Carver, the Badgers took down the Hawkeyes for the second time this season, 74-63.
There were a few sidebars coming into the game.
Would Aaron White play and be effective with his injured shoulder?
How about Gabe Olaseni? He was seen in a boot on campus last week.
What about Dan Dakich? He was the color commentator for ESPN who called Adam Woodbury gutless and cowardly the last time Iowa played Wisconsin.

Three champions crowned at WaMaC tourney

Solon splits home duals with Benton, Mount Vernon

EPWORTH– Louis Gnida, Kade Steuhm and Logan Linderbaum are WaMaC champs.
Solon’s varsity wrestling squad came home from Epworth Saturday with a fourth place finish at the WaMaC Tournament, just a few points behind third-place Williamsburg.
“I felt we started slow and lost a few matches in the first two rounds that might have kept us out of second place,” said Solon head coach T. J. Bevans. “We finished strong, though.”

Boys avenge loss to Sabers

SOLON– The Solon Spartans avenged an early-season basketball loss with a 61-44 win over Central Clinton of DeWitt Friday in Solon.
The varsity Spartans had dropped four of their last five games, and lost two in a row coming into the match-up, including a close 50-45 loss against West Delaware at Manchester Jan. 27.
The Sabers had defeated Solon 72-59 Dec. 16 in DeWitt.
Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the Spartans scored 25 points in the second period and took a 32-21 lead into halftime.
Solon sank 12 straight free throws in the final quarter to seal the win.

Lady Spartans lose heartbreaker to West Delaware

Girls rebound with win over Central DeWitt

SOLON– A couple of turnovers, a couple of missed shots and a last-second foul all spelled heartbreak for the Lady Spartans.
West Delaware’s Kasey Palmer went to the line with 2.5 seconds remaining and calmly sank two free throws to hand the Solon varsity girls basketball team a 46-45 home loss Jan. 27.
It was the third straight loss for the Lady Spartans after three straight wins, but the girls rebounded with a 45-41 road win Jan. 30 over Central Clinton of DeWitt.

Clippers knock off Bobcats, 55-41

TIFFIN– It’s a much better season this year for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boy’s varsity basketball team.
With a 55-41 win over the Benton Community Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Clippers improved to 11-4 on the season and notched their fourth win in a row for the second time in the 2014-15 campaign.
In contrast, Steve Ottoson’s crew only posted six wins last season with 15 losses.
Jake Neubauer, a junior, led CCA against the Bobcats with 14 points while senior Drew Wagner put up a dozen, mostly in the tumultuous second half.

Women of Troy upset by CR Kennedy

West’s second loss of season, 60-54

IOWA CITY– After having a 14-game winning streak snapped by West Des Moines Valley, the Iowa City West High Women of Troy rebounded with a 10-point win over Cedar Falls on the road Tuesday, Jan. 27.
But a visit from the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars Friday, Jan. 30, ended with West’s second loss of the season, and its first in the Mississippi Valley Conference. The Cougars won 60-54, dominating the game throughout the first half.

Independence wins WaMaC conference wrestling title

Murphy earns second for CCA at tourney

North Liberty Leader
EPWORTH– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Connor Murphy was crowned the 120-pound runner-up Saturday, Jan. 31, at the WaMaC Conference Tournament at Western Dubuque High School. Murphy was the top finisher for the Clippers, who placed 14th in overall team points.
Independence won the Conference Championship with 217.5 team points, Mount Vernon was second, Williamsburg finished third and Solon was the number four team.

West, City bowling teams split on the lanes

King and Queen pins go their separate ways

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The King and Queen pins have separated for a year.
The pins, traveling trophies for the West High and City High varsity bowlers, are symbols of the crosstown rivalry and objects of bragging rights much like “The Boot” for the football teams and “The Spike” for the volley-ballers.
For two years, the royal pins have resided in the trophy case at West High. But Friday, Jan. 30, the Little Hawks claimed the Queen with a 2,577 to 2,186 win over the Women of Troy at Colonial Lanes while the Trojans kept the King by beating City High, 2,752 to 2,515.

The Iowa women had two home games last week.
They opened with a 76-70 win over Michigan.
The Michigan win saw the Hawkeyes lead from start to finish.
The Hawks led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but the Wolverines kept hanging around. Bethany Doolittle was 3-4 from the free throw line in the last 41 seconds to give Iowa the win.
Great passing for the Hawkeyes as all five starters had at least two assists and they shot 57 percent from the floor.

Near sweep for wrestlers

The Hawkeye wrestlers won their first nine matches against the Northwestern Wildcats, but heavyweight Bobby Telford couldn’t finish the deal.
Iowa still dominated, 38-3.
Mike McMullan, who was ranked No. 4, took down Bobby in double-overtime in Iowa’s only loss.
Mike and Bobby have wrestled seven times with Mike winning four.
Mike was ranked No. 1 when Bobby beat him at the Midlands, 4-2, Dec. 30 at Evanston, Ill.
The dynamic duo... Thomas Gilman (125) and Cory Clark (133) started Iowa out with a technical fall and a pin.
