Not pretty, but…

Hawk Talk

A win is a win, but when you have a team down 21-0, like Iowa had the Missouri State Bears, you want to put the pedal to the metal and blow them out.
I would have liked to see C.J. Beathard or Cody Sokol get some snaps at quarterback, but Missouri State had other ideas.
The Bears scored a touchdown pass with 14:25 left in the game.
Ten seconds later, they intercepted a pass and went 28 yards for the score.
I was stunned! What could have been a rout turned into a tight game.

Iowa City Regina rumbles to victory over mistake-prone Spartans

SOLON– It was one step forward and two steps back for the Solon Spartans Friday night.
Iowa City Regina, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, pitched a shut-out against Solon, 38-0, in front of a large crowd at Spartan Stadium.
Despite the score, the Spartans were hanging tough with the Regals in the first half, but couldn’t overcome botched snaps, penalties and other miscues
“I thought we performed very well on the offensive and defensive lines.  We went toe-to-toe with them,” said head coach Kevin Miller. “Unfortunately, we had some untimely mistakes that they capitalized on.”

Lady Spartans rolling along

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans are ranked No. 2 in the Class 4A volleyball rankings, and they’ve been playing like it.
Solon walloped Durant 3-0 last Tuesday then took the title at the Cedar Rapids Washington tournament Saturday, defeating No. 9 Cedar Rapids Xavier in the championship game.
The Lady Spartans moved to 7-0, but did drop their first game of the season during a 2-1 win over Marion (ranked No. 12 in Class 4A) in pool play.

Mistakes plague Clippers in loss to Mid-Prairie

By Chris Umscheid

TIFFIN– Turnovers and penalties took a heavy toll on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Friday, Sept. 6, as they entertained the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie, Wellman.
The Hawks took the non-district contest, 27-13.
The game opened on a sour note with a fumble on the Clippers’ first possession, giving the Hawks a drive toward the goal line. CCA held them from scoring a touchdown, but Mid-Prairie still managed a field goal for a 3-0 lead.

West sweeps East

IOWA CITY– Two out of three wasn’t bad.
The West High Women of Troy swept the Waterloo East High Trojans 3-0 Tuesday, Sept. 3, at home in varsity volleyball action. West took the first set 25-18, but it was a hard-fought win.
“We weren’t ready to play that first one, were we?” coach Kathy Bresnahan asked rhetorically afterward.
