CCA’s Friday night lights get a little help from a star

Clipper football kicks off the season in a big way with singer Jake McVey

TIFFIN– There are many ways to conduct a fundraiser, but when Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Hughes went looking for a way to raise some additional money for the high school football program, he decided to go big.

CCA football to build on historic season

“We don’t want to be a one-hit wonder”

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– 2014 was a record-setting year for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers on the gridiron. The team posted a 7-2 record in the regular season and won the first district championship in school history. The Clippers’ season ended in the first round of the playoffs as Newton edged out CCA, 23-21.
The father-and-son coaching duo of Ronnie and Matt Hughes spearheaded a change, not just in tactics on the turf, but in the overall climate of the CCA football program over the past two years.

Fifteen returning seniors lead West High football

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Fifteen experienced seniors will lead the West High Trojans in gridiron battle this season. The Trojans finished the 2014 season at 7-5 overall and 3-1 in Class 4A District No. 7, second behind Pleasant Valley (4-0 in the district). Their season ended in the Class 4A quarterfinals as Cedar Rapids Washington ran over them, 44-19, after first and second round wins over Ottumwa, 28-0, and Linn-Mar, 38-34.

Talent in abundance for CCA cross country

TIFFIN– It’s a mix of change and consistency for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) cross-country teams this season. Ben Robison has taken the top spot in the boys’ program after a year as an assistant and a year as the middle school coach.
Robison takes over a program fourth in the state qualifying meet last year and returns three seniors and three juniors: Jake Tener (senior), Eric Douglass (senior), Kage Hinricks (senior), Luke Wingert (junior), Ben Oxley (junior) and Wyatt Sedlacek (junior).
Douglass was 24th in the 2014 State Meet and earned All-Conference honors along with Tener.

It’s fun to Just Tri

NORTH LIBERTY– When nearly 100 kids between the ages of 6 and 14 come out on a Sunday to swim, bicycle and run, everybody wins.
That was the scene at the fourth annual Just Tri! Youth Triathlon in North Liberty on Sunday, Aug. 2. Co-hosted by the North Liberty Recreation Department and Tri-Fit Agape of North Liberty, the event is not timed and places are not recorded. Distances of each leg of the triathlon are modified to accommodate three different age brackets.
The intent is as straightforward as its name: organizers just want kids to give it a try.

Hawkeye schedule part 2

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a two-part story about Iowa’s football schedule.
Last week I thought Iowa would be favored in four games (Illinois State, Iowa State, North Texas and Illinois).
I think Pittsburgh could be a toss-up and the Hawks will be underdogs against the Badgers, with the game at Wisconsin.
This week I’ll talk about the three home games against Maryland, Minnesota and Purdue, plus road trips to Maryland, Indiana and Nebraska.

Rourke, Bandy, Bowman earn First Team WaMaC West honors

North Liberty Leader

Clippers Blue softball earns berth in Des Moines tournament

The team battled a number of regional teams and finished in second place. The CCA Clippers Blue team were also invited to play in Kanas City, Mo., in the USSSA National tournament.

Hawkeye schedule

Hawk Talk

The Iowa Hawkeyes open the season Sept. 5 against Illinois State, which lost to North Dakota State in the championship game in the FCS division.
There is plenty of unrest in Hawkeye land. Iowa finished 7-6 last year and are 19-19 in the last three years.
Is this a make-or-break year for Captain Kirk?
Does Iowa have to win at least eight games to save his job?
I don’t know if I can answer either of those questions, but I will break down the schedule and predict if Iowa will be favored or not.
