Another high-speed chase ends in Solon

SOLON– For the second time in just over two months, a high-speed chase beginning on Interstate 80 found its way to Solon.
The pursuit began on Interstate 80 near the Wilton exit on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at approximately 2:30 p.m., according to Capt. Randy Jones, area commander for the Iowa State Patrol district office in Cedar Rapids.
A trooper on patrol checked the plates of a white passenger car, which turned out to be stolen, and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle attempted to elude the officer, and a chase began which reached speeds of 108 mph, Jones reported.
The white passenger car exited the interstate at the Highway 1 exit and proceeded toward Solon, but when the driver began to turn left onto Main Street, a trooper initiated a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, striking the left rear corner of the suspect vehicle, causing it to lose control in the intersection. The vehicle was halted and five juveniles were reportedly removed from the vehicle. Charges are pending against the driver, Jones said.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office notified the Solon Community School District of the ongoing pursuit, but before the call ended, the district was alerted the suspect was in custody.
“We were very appreciative of the communication as we were prepared to lock down all the schools,” said district superintendent Davis Eidahl.
