CCA battles Demons and Saints
TIFFIN– It only took Clear Creek Amana (CCA) three sets to drive out the Demons, and advance to the semifinal round of Class 3A regional play. The Clippers met the Washington Demons Monday night at home in a quarterfinal match and won 3-0.
In the first set, Washington took a 2-0 lead before CCA caught up. The lead bounced back and forth much like the ball until the Clippers put the game away, 25-21.
“We made a few hitting errors, but nothing to panic about,” said coach Brian Bronzynski. “We didn’t set the tone we wanted.”
The Clippers found the tone in the second set, playing a 25-14 victory tune. CCA built a 13-7 lead and prompted the Demons to take the first timeout of the night. A Clipper scoring barrage followed, taking them to a 21-12 lead. At 23-12, Washington again called for a temporary cease-fire. A kill from freshman Alyssa Weldon sealed the set.
In the third set the Clippers continued to pummel Washington, building a 20-9 lead. The Demons mounted a final rally, but fell to the home team, 25-15.
“The kids kept their focus and executed well,” said Bronzynski. “They cracked down on defense and ran the routes we needed to run.”
Maliah Fligg led the Clippers with 11 kills; Natalie Brimeyer and Amy Kalkhoff had eight each while Tara Walls put up six. Weldon, Hanna Stokes, Dacia Lipkea, Michelle Lutz and Grace Chabal also had kills in the effort. Kate Hergert was a perfect 14-14 in serves with a pair of aces, Weldon went 10 for 10 in serves with one ace, and Lipkea was seven-for-seven with an ace. Hergert led in assists with 25, Kalkhoff and Lutz had 14 digs each while Brimeyer had seven blocks total.
The win moved the Clippers to 21-13 on the season and set up a Thursday night match on the road at Cedar Rapids Xavier against the Saints that didn’t go as well. Xavier ended CCA’s season 3-0.
