Christmas Tree Safety Tips form the North Liberty Fire Dept.
NORTH LIBERTY– Christmas Trees add a special feeling and tradition to the holiday season but can also create danger to your home and family. On average, Christmas trees are the source of nearly 250 home fires each year, resulting in nearly 14 million dollars worth of damage. The North Liberty Fire Department wants you all to have a safe holiday season, so here are some tips to help prevent Christmas trees from catching fire.
Remember to check all tree lights for frayed or damaged wiring.
Replace any non-working bulbs.
Avoid decorating your tree with items that get very hot such as candles.
Keep your tree away from heat sources such as space heaters, wood burning stoves and fireplaces.
Unplug your tree lights if you leave your residence and when you go to bed.
Give your tree plenty of water and never let the tree base go dry.
Make sure your tree is fresh when you buy it. Don’t buy trees with brown needles or dry limbs.
Never place your tree in front of exits in your residence.
