Clipper girls are red hot

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) scoreboards are getting quite a workout these days. The board at the boys’ diamond in Tiffin sputtered and failed during a June 14 doubleheader against Waterloo Columbus that saw 27 runs go up in one game. Monday, June 18, the board in Oxford at the softball diamond wouldn’t even turn on.
Perhaps it knew the Clippers were going to fry its electronic mind with 42 runs over seven innings.
In 90-plus degree heat and humidity, the Clippers were smoking hot, blasting the Williamsburg Raiders 15-1 in a four-inning opener before obliterating the Raiders 27-0 in a three-inning nightcap.
Maliah Fligg opened the assault with a two-RBI single in the first inning of game one, opening the flood gates to a 9-0 lead. Mallory Neubauer put up a two-RBI single while Caitlin Wnek had a two-RBI double in the inning.
Both squads were held scoreless in the second, and the Raiders’ only run of the night came in the top of the third as a solo home run flew out over the center field fence. Wnek answered with another two-RBI double in the bottom of the third to make it 11-1. In the fourth, Fran Strub knocked-out a homer of her own bringing in Jazmyne Neely and Kara Brant (running for Mara Jones). The three runs ended the game on the mercy rule.
Maliah Fligg worked all four innings, giving up one hit, one earned run, striking out two and walking one.
The Clippers cranked-out five doubles in a row in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap on their way to a 13-0 lead. Fligg, Tara Walls, Neely and Neubauer all had RBI in the inning. Fligg drove-in three runs with a double. In the second inning, a Raider went to first after being hit by a Mariah McKinnon pitch, but was left stranded in the hot sun. The Clippers’ half of the inning saw 14 more runs cross the plate as Jones, Strub, McKinnon, Wnek, Fligg Mallory Madsen, Neubauer and Kara Brant put up hits. Neeley knocked a three-run homer making it 20-0. Coach Jim White put in several reserves such as Monica Bevans (two-RBI double) and Grace Chabal (RBI single), but the runs kept coming until the third out finally hit with CCA up 27-0.
The Raiders finally got a hit in the top of the third, but a pair of fly-outs to Neubauer and a foul-tip ended the game.
McKinnon struck-out one and gave up one hit in the effort.
The wins brought the Clippers’ record to 26-1, with the first loss of the 2012 campaign coming at the hands of Ankeny at the Fort Dodge Tournament on Saturday, June 16. The Clippers entered the week ranked number one in Class 4A according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The ladies travel to Solon Wednesday, June 27, to take on the Lady Spartans in a JV/Varsity contest. Regional action begins on Saturday, July 7, at home as the Clippers will face the winner of a Thursday, July 5, battle between Benton Community and Anamosa.
