Coralville Lake bald eagle watch and expo Feb. 9

IOWA CITY–The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Coralville Lake will be hosting a Bald Eagle Watch and Expo on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This event is free to the public and will have two different locations going simultaneously. The indoor venue will be at the Brown Deer Golf Club, 1900 Country Club Dr., Coralville. The outdoor venue will be a viewing site at the Tailwater West Picnic Shelter downstream from the dam at Coralville Lake.
Indoor expo venue
The indoor portion of this event will feature guest speakers and exhibitors. The guest speakers are Ty Smedes, “The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles” at 10:30 a.m.; Luke Hart, Macbride Raptor Project, presenting “Kestrel, Swainson, and Harris Hawks” at noon; and Mike Havlik, Des Moines Y- Camp, presenting “Big Owls Hoot and Little Owls Toot” at 1:30 p.m.
Local organizations and agencies such as the Iowa Wildlife Federation, the Johnson County Conservation Board, The Songbird Project, and others will set up informative displays featuring their organization and a variety of wildlife. These exhibitors include folks like Linda and Robert Scarth, nature photographers with some of their specialty gift items such as note cards and prints of their beautiful photographs; a unique store, The Otter Side of Nature, with educational and fun nature-oriented games, puppets, books, and more, for children of all ages; and the Pella Wildlife Company with their “Guardians of the Night” bat display that will feature the big brown bat. A variety of other surprises will delight just about everybody attending.
Outdoor viewing site
The picnic shelter in Tailwater West below the dam will have a warming fire along with hot chocolate, coffee and snacks. Volunteers from the Corps and the Iowa DNR will be on hand with scopes or binoculars to help you view the birds along the river downstream, or bring your own binoculars or telescopes. The refreshments will be available for purchase from Boy Scout Troop 218.
