Date change for senior advocate meal and movie

The monthly senior “Meal and a Movie” at the Solon Public Library has rescheduled back to Fridays. The April event will be on Friday, April 20, with the award winning movie, “Iron Lady” featuring Meryl Streep as Britain’s Margaret Thatcher. An additional treat this month will be a display of Czech artifacts by Louis Picek from Main Street Antiques & Art in West Branch. Louis will be set up and ready to speak about his display and heritage at 10:30 a.m., so come early. Following the movie, Louis will share some stories, show and tell his display, and special treats of delicious homemade kolaches will be served.
Lunch will be shepherd’s pie, coffee and dessert catered by Savvy at 11:30 a.m. Cost will be approximately $7. Call 319-624-2710 for reservations.

Smart money week coming up in April
During smart money week, the Solon Library will offer, “Take Control of your Finances: 101” on Thursday, April 26, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. The library will host representatives from local financial institutions and businesses to discuss basic finance in conjunction with smart money week. Representatives from the local banks as well as financial advisors will be on hand to answer questions about how to check or improve your credit score, how much should you save for retirement, when is it best to refinance and how to set up a college fund for your grandchildren. Everyone is welcome. There is no registration or fee. Bring your questions and join them. Library director, Kris Brown plans to expand the offerings for smart money week by making it an annual event. Your input for topics, seminars and programming to be added to the 2013 venue may be directed to Brown.

Think spring. Think garage sale time.
With spring cleaning upon us, it’s time to start thinking about the annual Solon area garage sale. It’s always on the first Saturday of June, which will be June 2 this year. Registration forms will be available at the library in mid-April. If you don’t have enough for a sale of your own, you may donate your items to the library’s sale. Please remember, however, that the library will not accept clothing, encyclopedias, LPs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, VCRs, old TV sets, or old computers. We will accept items for the library’s garage sale at any time– you don’t need to wait until late May.

Save the date May 31
Summer may seem like a ways off, but for the library staff planning for Summer Reading Program, it’s just around the corner. The Summer Reading Program “Kick Off Party” will be on Thursday, May 31, from 5 until 6:30 p.m. Pick up your reading logs and hear about the great fun prizes and programs that the staff is preparing.

‘Solon Snapshots’ pictorial history available
Due to popular demand, another order of the “Solon Snapshots” pictorial history of the area has arrived at the library. “Solon Snapshots” can also be ordered on-line at eaglebooks.com, or purchased at the circulation desk at the library. Cost is $30 per book. Here’s your chance to purchase your own personal copy.

‘The Mixing Bowl’
Be sure and enjoy the latest window design by Toni Russo, “The Mixing Bowl.” The many items so tastefully displayed will take one back to the 1930s. Many of the product cartons displayed are still on the market today with a much different look. You will want to notice the telephone and the baby high chair and marvel at the changes that have taken place.
There is a display of cookbooks up in the black cabinet by the door. The name of the display is “Mix up some new family favorites” and it includes lots of great cookbooks including some local books. The cookbooks are there to compliment Toni’s display and for patrons to check-out if they so desire. Also, there is a little guestbook on the table next to the display window where people can feel free to share their favorite kitchen memories.
