Edward Pettit

Edward L. Pettit, 71, of North Liberty, died at his home Friday, July 5, 2013.
Edward Leroy Pettit was born Jan. 22, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Edward and Josephine (Behles) Pettit. He had lived in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Ainsworth and North Liberty area all of his life. Ed worked in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator and some years in the restaurant industry. Employers included Coralville Excavating, Bowman Construction, Iowa City Excavating, Frantz Construction companies, Roberts Dairy and the Carousel restaurant. He retired in 2005 after over 50 years of hard labor yet continued to work part time until fall 2012. Ed enjoyed traveling, cars, music, photography and most importantly he loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
His family includes his former wife, Judy (Kinkaid) Jarvis and their children, Russell (Colleen) Jarvis of Cedar Rapids and children, Brandon, Amber and Austin; Steve (Suzi) Jarvis of Sebree, Ky. and children, Andrew and Ashley; former wife, Judith (Hoalton) Dittmer and their children, Mark Asher of Kansas City, Mo. and children, Amanda and Madison, Kelly Asher (deceased) and her children, Amber and Megan, Matt Asher of Bellevue, Neb., and his children, Damien, Randi, Shelbi, Jarrod and Jaxson, Dennis Pettit (Lisa Stultz) of Iowa City and children, Ryan, Tyler, Alivia and Kyren; former wife, Valerie (Brookins) Pettit and their children, Pam Behrends of Coralville and children, Shawn, Adam and Jesse, Karen Bruns of Elma, and children, Erica and Nicole, Tracy Melver or Marquette and Terry Melver of Coralville and children, Glen, Justin, Joshua, Zachary and Grace; girlfriend, Betty Jarrard of North Liberty; as well as several great-grandchildren and his siblings, Don Pettit (Evelyn) of Waterloo, Cliff Pettit of Iowa City, Tom Pettit of North Liberty, Ken Pettit of North Liberty, Jenny Mitchell of Iowa City; and sister-in-law, Judy Pettit of Iowa City.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kelly; and two brothers, Emmett Miles Pettit and Joseph Dewayne Pettit.
Funeral services were held at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City on July 12, with the Rev. Brent Hartwig officiating. The church hosted a public visitation on July 12, followed by services and burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his memory to the Iowa City Hospice or American Cancer Society.
