George “Bill” E. Hill Jr., 88, of Hiawatha died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services were Jan. 14 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial with military rites at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Janet: four children: Donna (John) Kinney of Cedar Rapids, Cheri Hill (Dennis) Tesolowski, of Seneca, S.C., Garie Hill and Jonathan Hill of Hiawatha; stepchildren Nathan (Carol) Hauge of Ely, Bradley Hauge of Cedar Rapids, Bill (T J) Hauge of St. Louis Park, Minn. and Kristine Johnson of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by his brother Walt (Pat) of Marion, a sister Nancy Hill (Larry) Lacy of Cedar Rapids. Sisters-in-law Sue Hill of Marion, Marlene Hill of Cedar Rapids and Gloria Hill of Benson, N.C. Also surviving are four grandsons, three step- grandsons and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Harold, Jim and Mahlon of Cedar Rapids and Richard of Benson, N.C.; three sisters, Naomi Nida of Mountain Home, Idaho, Cleo Williams of Tacoma, Wash., and Betty Hill of Puyallup, Wash.
George was born on Oct. 12, 1925, in Cedar Rapids the fourth of 10 children to George W. and Lillian V. (Miner) Hill. He attended Marion Public Schools through fifth grade and Cedar Rapids Public Schools through graduation in 1943.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 until 1945. After his honorable discharge, he worked for Iowa Manufacturing and was a weld shop foreman for 14 years. He was a real estate broker for 40 years and had his own firm, Hawkeye Hill Realty. After leaving the real estate business, he worked at Septagon Construction as their shop supervisor.
He was a member of the El Kahir Shrine; American Legion, Post #674, and many other fraternal organizations. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Christ in Cedar Rapids.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
