Charles Hale Conlee, 88, of Solon, formerly of Cantril, died at 2:23 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Solon Nursing Care Center. He was born Sept. 24, 1923, near Cantril to Charles and Chloe Hale Conlee and married Mildred Lucke Johnson Aug. 14, 1960, in Cantril. She died Sept. 25, 2008. Hale graduated from Milton High School in 1940, served in the U.S. Army as an aircraft mechanic in Hawaii, Philippine Islands and Japan during World War II and was a long-time member of the Russell-Strait Post No. 483 of the American Legion, Milton. He farmed near Cantril, was a custodian in Fox Valley and Van Buren schools and was a bus driver for Fox Valley for 35 years. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Janet Johnson Norris of Berkeley, Calif., a stepson, David Johnson (Brenda) of North Liberty, a step-daughter-in-law, Beverly Johnson of Hoover, Ariz., eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, two stepsons, William and Stanley Johnson, a grandson and three sisters.
His body has been cremated. A memorial service was held Jan. 29 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial of cremains with military rites by Russell-Strait Post will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril. Memorials to Cantril Grass Roots for Waubonsie Park may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 105 Weston Drive, East, North Liberty, IA 52317.
