Hancher presents Lucky Plush Productions’ ‘Punk Yankees’ March 8 at Space/Place Theater
IOWA CITY– Using dance to investigate issues of intellectual property, Lucky Plush Productions combines live performance, video, and the Internet in “Punk Yankees.” The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present the company at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Space/Place Theater, which is located in North Hall on the UI campus.
“Punk Yankees” is largely made up of repurposed and borrowed choreography, much of which the audience may recognize, including work by Beyonce, Bob Fosse, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Michael Jackson and many others. The work addresses issues of fair use, including mash-ups, stylistic reference, impersonation and sampling.
Lucky Plush Productions recently celebrated its 10th year. The company’s founder and artistic director, Julia Rhoads, was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2010.
The website http://www.stealthisdance.com is connected to the “Punk Yankees” project. Visitors to the site can grapple with the issues the work presents and see clips from “Punk Yankees.”
The performance is supported by the Hancher Partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.
