Hawkeye women have talent

Hawk Talk

When you start with Megan Gustafson (6-3) at center, you have a great player to build a basketball team around.
Gustafson, who was named First Team All-Big Ten last year, is a preseason first team pick this year.
She led the Hawks, averaging 18.5 points and 10.1 rebounds, shooting 65 percent from the floor.
Iowa Head Coach Lisa Bluder said Gustafson works hard on every single possession.
“She is an amazing player,” said the coach.
Iowa lost all-time leading scorer Ally Disterhoft and she won’t be easy to replace, but Iowa has some good talent coming back.
Sophomore Kathleen Doyle stepped in when Tania Davis went out with an injury and made the All-Big Ten Freshman team.
“Kathleen is a natural leader and was selected captain,” said Bluder. “She is faster this year and looking for more scoring opportunities.”
Tania Davis is back, fully recovered from her knee injury.
Coach Bluder said she is way ahead of schedule and should be ready for the first game.
Sophomore Makenzie Meyer started 23 games last year and led the team in 3-point shooting (36 percent).
Chase Coley and Carly Mohns are the two seniors on the team.
Both could start or come off the bench.
Junior Hannah Stewart, also voted captain, and sophomore Amanda Ollinger add depth to the front line.
Alexis Sevillian, who redshirted last year, has quickness on both ends of the floor.
Paula Valiño Ramos (6-3) adds depth to the front line, while walk-on Zion Sanders (5-8) helps out the backcourt.
