NORTH LIBERTY– A cupcake may be small in size, but it is a powerful creation.
A cupcake, too, can bring people together; perhaps it’s easier to set aside differences when biting into a moist, chocolaty dream, or maybe life’s greatest questions can wait while enjoying a rich red velvet creation. Whatever the attraction, JJ’s Cupcakes and More in North Liberty offers it to the fullest.
Janee Bradshaw, business owner and cupcake creator, has been baking her delicious version of cupcakes for a long time, but with some inspiration from her husband, Tim, and her daughter, Jessica Jane (for whom the shop is named) she finally decided to start her own business. The bakery, which also caters special events such as weddings, birthdays, showers and other occasions, offers upwards of 20 cupcake flavors, chocolate covered strawberries, shakes and slushies, cookies, ice cream and more. Customers describe Bradshaw’s creations as not overly-sweet, moist, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
At the business’ grand opening event on Aug. 17 at 25 E. Cherry St., a host of interested customers came to JJ’s Cupcakes to try North Liberty’s newest sweet shop. Tom and Mary Nurre traveled from Amana to try the confections, and ended up hitting it off with another couple, Curtis and Mary Smith.
“It’s more fun than anything I’ve done today,” Tom Nurre said with a giant grin as he licked the wrapping from his Boston Crème cupcake.
Both Tom Nurre and Curtis Smith served in WWII, and were surprised to find out they had been neighbors all these years. Smith was an Air Force commercial pilot, while Nurre served his time in the Army working with aircraft.
“He fixed the props, I flew ‘em,” Smith said.
It was a match made in cupcake heaven, a community atmosphere that included good food, good conversation and good fun.
“I’m so lucky you guys got to meet,” said Bradshaw, as she handed out more free samples.
“[The grand opening] was a great way to get the product out to the public,” said Jim Wheeler. “It’s nice for us– we live down the street. We’ll be back again.”
Mr. Wheeler’s wife, Pat Wheeler said she was also impressed with the product, calling it very tasty, and hopes the best for the new North Liberty venture.
The historic corner building has long been a storefront that specializes in food. Prior to the turn of the 20th century, the Koser family built the grocery store and operated it for three generations. Since then, it has served as a bank branch, a gas station, a pizza joint and a meat market. In more recent years, the building was purchased by Troy and Lora Miller, who opened Naomi’s Kitchen take-it-and-bake-it facility in 2004, and later added a spot to satisfy the sweet tooth as Isaac’s Creamery. The Millers still operate Naomi’s Kitchen, while the Bradshaws have taken over the Isaac’s location on the west end of the building.
The folks at JJ’s Cupcakes aim to continue that tradition.
And now, the waiting is over. Visit JJ’s Cupcakes for cookies, cupcakes, ice cream and more delicious treats at 25 E. Cherry St. in North Liberty.
