Iowa City woman killed at Lake Macbride campground during storm
SOLON– An Iowa City woman died after being struck by a falling tree early Sunday, May 29, at Lake Macbride State Park near Solon. Jennifer Marie Lewis, 31, was alone in her tent on Macbride’s south side campground during a thunderstorm with heavy rain and wind just after 9 a.m., according to information from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The tent was struck by a tree falling from adjacent private ground on to her campsite. Camping companions contacted DNR park workers who were in the area notifying campers and boaters of the severe weather threat. Park workers contacted the Solon Volunteer Fire Department and began CPR on the victim. Lewis was transported by ambulance to University Hospitals, where she was pronounced dead. Investigation into the accident continues.
