Liberty Centre Blues & BBQ is five years old this month
NORTH LIBERTY– To properly celebrate a landmark birthday of North Liberty’s annual summer kick-off, Liberty Centre Blues & BBQ welcomes back blues headliner Bob Dorr and the Blue Band, Iowa’s consummate blues entertainers, who are also celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary.
We still have spots available for party volunteers. If you haven’t signed up yet, you are going to want to get in on this! We’ve got goodies for all our volunteers, so respond now. Really, it’s a blast.
The community’s premier festival of food, music and fun will take place Sunday, May 29, from 12–10 p.m., in the heart of North Liberty, just to the north of Liberty Centre Park & Pond at Penn Street and Liberty Way. As always, the family-friendly event includes free kids’ activities from noon until 7 p.m., including carnival-style games, inflatable fun like a giant slide, obstacle course, Inflata-hoops, bouncy house and a bungee run, catch-and-release fishing in the pond, baseball pitching, an interactive petting zoo, balloons, tattoos, face painting and more. Volunteers from the North Liberty Fire Department will visit with their fire safety trailer and fire trucks, and everyone can enjoy dunking their favorite victims in the dunk tank. Local radio station KKRQ– 100.7, the Fox will broadcast the festivities and musical funk during a live remote from 12–2 p.m.
Food vendors include festival veterans and newcomers alike, offering everything from crepes and kettle corn to burgers and ice cream. Of course, purveyors of mouth-watering, smoking barbecue will be grilling to satisfy everyone’s carnivorous cravings, as well as competing to win the afternoon’s barbecue cook-off challenge. After enjoying hot barbecue, festival-goers can cool off with a cold drink in the beverage garden, where all ages are welcome (but only patrons 21 and older will receive a beverage bracelet upon showing identification).
All day, regional artists will be on stage, performing the blues they do best. Ernie Peniston, Dave Zollo and BJ Jaggers– coming together for the first time as Temporary Blues– take the stage at 12 p.m., followed by the Avey Brothers at 2:30 p.m., Kevin “B.F.” Burt and the Instigators at 5:15 p.m., and wrapping up the night will be Iowa Blues Hall of Fame inductee Bob Dorr, joined onstage by the Blue Band beginning at 7:45 p.m.
The sun sets on the fifth birthday celebration with a fireworks show over Liberty Centre Pond at 10 p.m. Kids 14 and under can also enter a raffle to detonate the first firework of the evening.
Admission is free to everyone. For more information, visit www.northlibertyiowa.org/bluesandbbq.
