Liberty High falls, 49-10, to Regina

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s girls basketball program opened the 2017-2018 season, the first for the new school, with a Junior Varsity (JV) scrimmage Tuesday, Nov. 14, at home, against Iowa City Regina.
The Regals short-circuited the Lightning, 49-10, and were up, 19-0, before Erica Heisdorffer put in Liberty’s first basket, a two-point shot. Cami Mac, Liberty’s first female student athlete to qualify for State Competition in cross country, dropped in a two-point basket with 4:49 remaining in the second period as the Bolts lagged behind 26-4. Meika Elliott hit a pair of free throws for six Lightning points, while Mac struck again late in the period. Liberty trailed 35-8 at that point. A free throw apiece from Heisdorffer and Elliott rounded out Liberty’s scoring.
The first official game of the season was held Tuesday, Nov. 21, against Fairfield, in Fairfield.
The Liberty JV compete at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25, at Waterloo West and host Mount Vernon at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27.
