SOLON– The 2016 season for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ varsity baseball team ended Friday, July 15, in Solon as the Mount Vernon Mustangs won a Class 3A District 9 semifinal game, 6-3.
The Clippers ended the season at 19-20 overall while the Mustangs (28-10 overall) advanced to face Solon in the district final on Monday, July 18, in Solon.
The Mustangs did the bulk of their damage in the bottom of the third inning with a five-run barrage built on an RBI double, a three-run homer and an RBI single. Mount Vernon added a bit of cushion with an RBI double in the fourth inning.
The Clippers started to rally back in the top of the fifth when Jake Neubauer launched a grounder to center field, good for a single, allowing Cody Ogden to scamper home for CCA’s first run of the ball game. Grayson Rotter scored on a passed ball to make it a 6-2 affair. Camden Armstrong grounded out in the sixth inning, buying Dalen Liddell time to dash to home plate to make it 6-3. However, Cappy’s Boys ran out of chances as the Mustangs held on for victory.
The game marked the final appearance for seniors Jake Neubauer and Robby Swails. Neubauer went the distance on the mound, giving up eight hits (including one homer) and six runs (five earned), while striking out four and walking two. The Clippers had eight hits from David Jensen (two), Liddell (two, both doubles), Neubauer (two), Ogden (a double) and Rotter.
