New best selling books

Local best-sellers are listed in the Sunday paper and several of those listed have arrived on the library shelves this week. The number one book in eastern Iowa this week, “The Sacred Acre: The Ed Thomas Story,” by Mark Tabb is a title all will recognize. Ed Thomas was 58 years old and helping his community recover from a tornado when he was gunned down by one of his former students while working with a group of Parkersburg football and volleyball players. The murder of this hometown hero shocked the nation. Ed’s family and community reeled from the shock. This double tragedy is no match for faith, love and the power of forgiveness.
Coming in at number six on the list is “What It Means to Be a Hawkeye: Kirk Ferentz and Iowa’s Greatest Players,” by Lyle Hammes. More than 50 of the biggest names from eight decades of Iowa football share in their own words their Hawkeye gridiron memories.

More new shelf additions
Not making the best-seller list just yet but available a for check-out is The Gazette’s “Greatest Moments In Iowa Hawkeye Football History.” This is a nostalgic trip down memory lane of unforgettable stories of special players and coaches from when Iowa stood above the rest.
Off the sports field, but still in the nonfiction category is the epic story of one of England’s greatest families, “The Churchills: In Love and War,” by Mary S. Lovell. The Churchills were an extraordinary family and Winston was recently voted “The Greatest Briton.” His failures and triumphs are revealed in a poignant and sometimes tragic private life.
On the fiction side of the shelf, look for “Cold Wind” and “Back Of Beyond” by C J Box. Both are novels in the Joe Pickett series. In “Cold Wind,” Earl Alden is found dead dangling from a wind turbine and it’s Earl’s wife and Pickett’s mother-in-law, Missy, who is arrested. But Joe questions whether the death is what it appears to be. Is Missy set up? With the sheriff on one side, his mother-in-law on the other and estranged friend, Nate, on his own mission, whichever way this goes, it’s not going to be good. In “Back Of Beyond,” brilliant cop and recovering alcoholic Cody Hoyt learns his mentor and AA sponsor is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. In a cat and mouse game where it is apparent that the murderer is aware of Cody’s every move, Cody treks into the wilderness to stop the killer.
“One Dog Night” is the latest of David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter mysteries. When Noah Galloway is arrested for the arson murder of 26 people, he knows that he needs defense attorney Andy Carpenter. Andy soon learns that the arson is just the beginning of an ongoing conspiracy that grows more deadly by the day.
“Deadly Cove” is the seventh novel by Brendan Dubois in the Lewis Cole mystery series. In times of economic uncertainty, Lewis Cole presses ahead investigating the murder of a charismatic activist at an anti-nuclear protest.
