No. 3 City High knocks-off No. 1 West in final second

IOWA CITY– City High’s Scott Tribbey launched a shot at the West High goal from about 30 yards out and scored as time ran out Tuesday, May 13, at the University of Iowa soccer field. His shot gave the number three-rated Little Hawks a 1-0 win over the top-ranked and until that moment, undefeated, Trojans.
But, some say his shot came after the game clock had hit 00:00. Curiously, the University’s soccer complex does not have a horn that sounds when time runs out.
“Not a chance,” West coach Brad Stiles said after the match when asked if time was still on the clock when Tribbey scored. “Because I looked at it about two seconds, and he was still taking a touch, and my defender was still diving in. At that point there’s no way he got it off in time.” The referee, pointing to his wristwatch disagreed, and instead of going into overtime tied at 0-0, the score stood.
The Little Hawks dominated the first half of the rivalry match out-shooting West 12-2 and giving the Trojans’ keeper, Zach Serovy a workout. In the second half the Trojans’ mounted more attacks but were denied as City defenders continued to thwart them at every turn.
“We had some chances,” Stiles said. “It could’ve easily been a 2-3 or 3-3 game. Nobody wanted to convert until the end. Maybe some of the effort wasn’t 100 percent, and they’ll learn from that. We had some close games and one of them was bound to not go our way.”
Stiles gave credit to Tribbey saying, “He had a great shot there at the end.”
As for when that shot actually was made, Stiles said, “It was close enough to leave it be.”
The win gave City a 10-2 record overall while West’s changed to 13-1.
Following the boys match the varsity girls took to the pitch with the Women of Troy extracting some measure of revenge with a 3-0 win to improve their record to 10-1 overall, and making City High’s record 5-5. Tia Saunders, Ali Peterson and Anna Hausler scored in the contest with assists by Peterson and Emma Cooper.
