TIFFIN– The Knights of Davenport Assumption locked themselves into a three-way battle for the top of Class 3A District 4, and either a guaranteed football playoff berth or possible wild card spot Friday, Oct. 13, by defeating the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers 41-7 in Tiffin. The Clippers, with four losses, are out of the playoff picture for 2017 and were playing their final home game of the year ahead of ending the season Friday, October 20 in DeWitt.
The Knights began spoiling CCA’s Senior Night with 4:47 remaining in the first quarter by scoring on a short run for a 7-0 lead.
Following the Assumption touchdown, the Clippers started a drive, which ended in a punt which the Knights returned 50-plus yards for their second touchdown with 3:10 remaining in the quarter.
Assumption struck again with 6:48 left in the half on another short run to make it 21-0. The Creek Boys dodged one bullet after Assumption picked off an Ethan Postler pass, kicking off a drive ending in another Knights touchdown. But, a penalty on Assumption negated it. However, with 2:19 remaining in the half, the Knights scored to take a 28-0 lead going into halftime.
Quentin Gisleson gave Clipper Nation reason to cheer early in the third quarter as he intercepted an Assumption pass. Unfortunately, he was injured in the process and was seen later with an ice bag taped to a leg. Darius Moore gave the crowd even more reason to cheer when, with 9:29 left in the quarter, he caught a Postler pass and scampered 57 yards downfield to score the Clippers’ sole touchdown. Mitch Evans booted the ball through the uprights for the extra point and CCA was on the scoreboard, but trailing 28-7.
Just over three minutes later the Knights went up 35-7 and with two minutes remaining in the quarter, struck for the final time. The Clippers blocked the point-after kick resulting in a 41-7 final.
Postler completed 12 of 24 passes for 138 yards, Matt Brimeyer led the ground attack with 18 yards on 10 carries while Cade Gallagher went 14 yards on four carries and Trevor Stockman traveled 13 yards on seven carries. Moore took three Postler passes 73 yards and Cade Stratton went 35 yards on a trio of receptions.
Brimeyer and Dylan Sheely led the Clippers’ defensive effort with five solo tackles apiece.
