Sally Cornwall

Sally Cornwall, 88, passed away at the Solon Nursing Care Center on March 4, 2013. She chose to donate her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. A memorial service will be planned for early summer in the Okoboji area. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
A lifelong Iowa resident, Sally was born in Tipton on Jan. 15, 1925, to Carson and Marjorie Cobb, the eldest of two children. She graduated from Tipton High School.
After attending Coe College, Sally traveled to Estherville for a teaching position. In Estherville, she met F.C. “Bing” Ingram. They married and eventually settled in Storm Lake.
While raising two children, she and a friend founded the Storm Lake Community Theater in which she was a regular on stage in numerous musical productions. She was also the youth choir director at the Presbyterian Church and often sang for weddings, funerals and special events.
Two years after her husband’s death in 1966, Sally married Mabry Cornwall and moved to the Spencer/Lake Okoboji area for the next 38 years. She continued performing with the Spencer Community Theater, was a patron of the Okoboji Summer Theater, and supported several community service organizations as a volunteer.
In the early 1980s, Sally founded the Alzheimer’s support group at a time when very little was known about the illness that had afflicted her husband, Mabry.
In the mid-1980s, Sally served on the Planning and Zoning Board for the City of Okoboji. She later served two terms on the Okoboji City Council. She was an active member of PEO.
Sally will be remembered for her optimism, genuine interest in and compassion for others, community leadership, good humor, and love of nature. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, and an avid reader. Her family has often referred to her as the Goodwill Ambassador.
Celebrating Sally’s life are her son, Todd Ingram, his wife, Lisa, and their children Elizabeth and Robert Ingram of North Liberty; her daughter, Sara Ingram, and her husband, David Shultz; her granddaughter Emily Meyer and her husband, Patrick, and their children Grant and Cora; and her granddaughter Sally Johnson, all of Denver, Colo. She is also survived by her brother, Forrest “Frosty” Cobb, of Spirit Lake and Texas.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Solon Nursing Care Center for the dedicated and sensitive care they provided for Sally during her final years, and Hospice of Iowa City for their care during Sally’s final days. Online condolences can be sent at www.lensingfuneral.com.
