SHS Octagon Mini Dance Marathon Saturday, Feb. 1, to benefit UI Dance fundraiser
SOLON– The annual Octagon Club Mini Dance Marathon will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9 p.m. until midnight in the commons at Solon High School.
The mini-Dance Marathon is held in support of the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon. It is a fundraiser to donate money to families that are currently or have been previously afflicted with cancer. The cancer victims aided by this are children.
The event started in 1985 and has raised over $12 million dollars to help defray the cost of treatment while patients and their families seek treatment at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Three years ago, the Octagon Club of Solon changed their winter dance theme from WPA to dance marathon to help Brett Smith of Solon, who had been stricken with leukemia. While he was in treatment, Smith and his family felt the direct benefit and care of the dance marathon and the funds raised went partly to his family, and to many other families being treated at the university.
Last year, their attention shifted to helping Nora Sanderson, another Solon youth struggling to fight against cancer.
This year the goal is to raise $1,500 to donate to the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon. The University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon boasts many Solon High School alumni who are current University of Iowa students.
While the students at the university pledge to dance for 24 hours straight to recognize the difficulty in dealing with such a terrible disease, the Solon group will only dance for three hours. Ultimately they aim to raise awareness of this disease that touches so many families, and to raise funds that will be donated to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon.
There will be pep-rally in the high school gym on Friday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. There, current Solon students will hear from many former Solon students who are participating in Dance Marathon. At the rally the former students will share why they have gotten involved in Dance Marathon and what it means to them to be a part of it.
Fundraising will begin in earnest on Jan. 27. That week the Octagon Club of Solon will be selling dance marathon wrist bands and tickets to the dance on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9 p.m. until midnight.
If anyone in the Solon community would like to make a donation, please feel free to bring it by the main office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 27 through Friday, Jan. 31. Please make all checks payable to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon.
